Manchester United to have team barbecue and not an open-top parade if they win the Europa League

Manchester United will hold a team barbecue and not an open-top parade if they win the Europa League next week.

United have the opportunity to end what has been a wretched season on a high by beating Tottenham in Bilbao on May 21 and claim their first European trophy in eight years.

It is tradition for clubs to celebrate with their fans but, instead, United will hold an internal gathering at their Carrington training ground.

If Spurs win, it’s been reported they will take to the streets of North London on an open-top bus.

A similar event is difficult logistically for United as they still have to play Aston Villa in the Premier League on May 25 before jetting out to Asia for matches in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

When they return, the bulk of the squad then have to report for international duty.

Players restricted to two free tickets each

The BBC also report the United players have been restricted to two free tickets for the game at San Mames, although they have the option to purchase up to 10 more.

Club employees will not receive tickets, as was previously the case, although United have organised a watchalong in central Manchester.

The 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham on Sunday was another disappointing setback for a United side that sit 16th in the Premier League, a point and a place above Spurs, and head coach Ruben Amorim admitted even victory next week would merely paper over the cracks.

He said: “We are going to face a team from the Premier League so we are going to struggle. Of course we are going to be more focused, and that is a concern because we have to be focused every game.

“For me it doesn’t matter if we win the Europa League because the problems are much bigger than that.”
