A most frustrating win in 13 innings is still a win – Dodgers Digest

The series between the Dodgers and Mets got off to a wet start, as a 98-minute rain delay killed off the starting pitching matchup.

The game will resume at 9:35 ET

Coming back from that, it was the Dodgers who took the lead and then added on later as the pen bridged the gap to the end. It looked like they’d cruise to a win, but Tanner Scott blew another game in the 9th, and things ended up being a festival of failure by both teams until the 13th, when the Dodgers finally managed to score and secure a 7-5 victory.

======

Clayton Kershaw was the latest Dodger starter to not last very long, but thankfully it wasn’t at all his fault. After a lead-off walk in the 1st, he retired five in a row, including seeing that walk erased by a double play. So he faced the minimum through two frames before he was removed due to the rain delay, which amounted to a brief but promising follow-up start.

On the other end, it was Griffin Canning, who also faced the minimum in the 1st despite a walk because Mookie Betts got back-picked at first by Francisco Alvarez. He also issued a two-out walk in the 2nd, but that amounted to nothing.

The 3rd was interesting, as a lead-off single for Michael Conforto was followed by a one-out Shohei Ohtani walk, and both of them ended up tagging up and advancing on a weird play where Mookie’s flyout to right was bobbled due to a collision between Tyrone Taylor and Juan Soto.

That was when the rain delay struck and ended Canning’s night, but his line continued on when Max Kranick took over. Canning was charged with a walk to Freddie Freeman that loaded the bases since he left in a 3-1 count, and then back-to-back singles from Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez plated three runs to make it 3-0 Dodgers.

Taking over for Kershaw in the 3rd was Matt Sauer, who allowed a solo shot to Brett Baty that cut the lead to 3-1.

Then the 4th started with a Starling Marte bunt single to Max Muncy, who threw the ball away and advanced him to second. After a groundout moved him over to third, a weird play followed on a Pete Alonso flyball to Teoscar Hernandez. It seemed like an inning-ending double play on a great throw from Teoscar, but instead was waved off and Marte was granted the run because of interference called against Muncy at third.

The ruling is apparently that Muncy intentionally got in the line of sight of Marte, even though he never looked away from where the ball was. Either way, that cut the lead to 3-2 Dodgers.

Fortunately, after a 4th where they got just a two-out single, the Dodger bats rallied again in the 5th with two outs. A Will Smith walk was followed by Teoscar getting HBP, and then back-to-back singles from Andy Pages and Muncy pushed two runs across to make it 5-2.

After Sauer continued in the 5th and worked around a lead-off single to complete another three big innings, Ben Casparius took over and got three big innings of his own. He started with six straight outs before issuing a lead-off walk in the 8th and then resuming his dominance with three more outs in a row. He struck out six in his massive relief outing that provided a bridge directly to the end of the game.

Unfortunately, the Dodgers didn’t get a baserunner in the 6th, 7th, or 8th, and then after Shohei Ohtani singled in the 9th with one out, he was erased on a caught stealing, so the Mets pen faced the minimum there as well.

That proved surprisingly important, as Tanner Scott had his second meltdown in three outings in the 9th. He allowed two singles, a triple, and a walk in the inning for three runs and barely escaped without getting walked off.

The details don’t really matter, just terrible.

Chance to steal one game to start a tough road stretch, manager put you back in for confidence last time out, coming off a day rest, and just absolute disaster. Fuck me.

Alex Vesia entered in relief to get the final two outs, and while he gave up a single with two outs, he got the final out of the frame to send things into extras.

“Bonus” baseball.

In the 10th, the torture was prolonged, as Edwin Diaz hit a batter and walked a batter to load the bases with nobody out, but then Teoscar Hernandez grounded out and Max Muncy hit a double play to allow him to escape.

Vesia continued in the 10th, starting things with a strikeout before giving way to Lou Trivino, who hit a batter but also got two outs to send things to the 11th.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything in their half of the 11th, going down in order and only advancing the Manfred Runner to third with two outs, and Anthony Banda started the other half. He got an out, issued an intentional walk, got a strikeout, and then issued an unintentional walk to load the bases. Luis Garcia entered and got behind 3-0, but managed to get a groundout.

To the 12th, where the Dodgers started with a flyout that got the Manfred Runner to third, but a comebacker, an intentional walk, and strikeout ended hopes there. So it looked like the loss would finally come, but Garcia issued an intentional walk, a sac bunt advanced both runners, another intentional walk loaded them up, and then the Mets hilariously grounded into a double play.

To the 13th!

Finally a run in extras scored as Teoscar Hernandez doubled to plate the Manfred Runner and make it 6-5. After two failed bunt attempts by Hyeseong Kim he singled to left to corner the runners, and then on an Andy Pages sac fly he got doubled up at first as he was running on the play. It was 7-5 after that, but the umpire didn’t call obstruction despite it being the same play as Muncy’s.

Garcia continued on in the 13th by getting the side in order to secure the victory, and he finished with a big seven outs.

About tomorrow…

Nick Frasso also isn’t an option, threw 73 pitches on Wednesday

If they wanted a non 40-man arm that would require a DFA or shifting one of Roki Sasaki, Evan Phillips, Tyler Glasnow or Kirby Yates to the 60-day IL

Also would obviously need to make free up a 26-man spot as well

Same place, same time, and same teams at 1:15 PM HT/4:15 PM PT/7:15 PM ET, this time on FOX. It’ll be Tony Gonsolin looking to not have a bleeding finger this time against David Peterson.
