Lee Grant gives his first sit down interview on becoming new manager of Huddersfield Town, looking ahead to the 2025/26 season.

The 42 year old has been appointed on a three-year contract, with the Terriers hoping they will be battling for promotion back to the Championship.

Previously Assistant Coach at Ipswich Town, where he contributed to their back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, Grant retired as a goalkeeper in 2022 after a 22-year career with over 500 appearances, including at Manchester United.

He worked under notable coaches like Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Jose Mourinho, and Kieran McKenna, and was highly recommended by the FA for his coaching qualifications.

At Ipswich, he played a key role in their attacking strategy, leading to 101 goals in League One (2022/23) and 92 in the Championship (2023/24).

Grant aims to build a winning Huddersfield team that excites and represents its supporters, with clear ambitions for success. His first interview is available on HTTV, and a press conference is scheduled for May 29, 2025.

CLUB STATEMENT:

– Huddersfield Town appoint Lee Grant as Manager– Grant joins following successful period as Assistant Coach at Ipswich Town– Comments from Chairman Kevin Nagle and Manager Lee Grant

We are delighted to confirm that Lee Grant has today been appointed Manager of Huddersfield Town, joining the Club on a three-year contract ahead of the 2025/26 Sky Bet League One season.

Having previously been Assistant Coach of Ipswich Town throughout their rise from Sky Bet League One to the top flight in consecutive seasons, Grant has been permitted a release to join Town with immediate effect following the conclusion of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign after a compensation agreement was agreed. Lee will be joined at the Club by his own coaching team, with full details to be shared in due course.

A former goalkeeper in his playing days, the now 42-year-old Grant hung up his gloves in 2022 after a successful 22 year career, making over 500 professional appearances before retiring at Manchester United, where he combined his position within the squad alongside furthering his education and experience in coaching.

Throughout his career, Grant has worked at close quarters with several coaches of note. Taking on lessons learned from the likes of Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Jose Mourinho and Kieran McKenna, his ambition to become a coach within his own right has been a long-term ambition. Completing his coaching badges in the latter stages of his playing career, Grant was highly recommended by the FA during the Club’s initial enquiry process having impressed while acquiring his qualifications.

Crossing paths with Kieran McKenna in Manchester, upon retirement Grant was immediately reunited with McKenna as Assistant Coach at Ipswich Town, becoming a key component of a coaching team that inspired back-to-back promotions from Sky Bet League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons.

Taking a particular responsibility for how the team attacked, Ipswich scored 101 times on their way to securing automatic promotion from Sky Bet League One in the 2022/23 season before repeating the same feat in the Sky Bet Championship a year later, with 92 goals to their name.

Now joining Huddersfield Town in his first lead role, Grant departs Suffolk with the best wishes of McKenna, who has gone on record to state:

“We wish Lee the very best with the next step in his career. Lee has been a big part of our success in recent seasons and has developed fantastically as a coach during his time here. He deserves this managerial opportunity at Huddersfield.”

“Having been through a full and complete recruitment process, we couldn’t be happier to appoint Lee as Manager and confident with the decision we have made.

“Each time I have met with Lee and discussed the Club, he has presented detailed ideas, been passionate about the way he has described his way of playing football and shown a desire to succeed and take on this opportunity that propelled him beyond other candidates.

“Throughout our due diligence, it was clear how impressive Lee’s coaching work was, and his reputation couldn’t have been higher with everyone who has crossed his path. Playing his part in successful teams both on and off the pitch over the course of his career to date, that’s a habit we believe he will be well positioned to continue at Town.

“We will support Lee and work together to build a team to help us achieve our goals this season, and beyond. His values and ambition aligns with our own, and I look forward to seeing him lead our First Team into another important campaign ahead.”

Huddersfield Town Manager Lee Grant added:

“First and foremost, it’s an incredible honour to be Manager of Huddersfield Town.

“This is an exciting time to be joining the Club and there is so much potential and opportunity for us going forward, and I couldn’t be more motivated to play my part in that journey.

“I’d like to thank Chairman Kevin Nagle and CEO Jake Edwards for giving me their trust, and I hope to repay that with time as we head into the summer and season ahead.

“I have a clear idea of what I want my Town team to look like and how I want us to play. My priority is to not only win, but give our amazing supporters a side that they’re proud to represent them and excited to watch.

“Our goals and ambitions are clear, and there is much hard work that needs to take place in order to put us in a position to succeed. That process begins today.”

Supporters can hear from our new Manager in his first interview on HTTV by CLICKING HERE, with his first press conference set to take place tomorrow, Thursday 29 May 2025.

Welcome to the Club, Lee!

Here’s how fans reacted as Lee Grant gives his first sit down interview on the becoming new manager of Huddersfield Town…

@Joerudd_39: Need to build something special again with the fans it’s a brave move but get behind him first job in management he’ll be full of optimism

@htafcedits: Now lets get behind him as fans of the club instead of berating him before he has a chance

@ollieitfc07: been a great coach- don’t write him off Huddersfield fans

@IpswichTownFans: All the best Lee and thanks for your efforts during a fantastic time for #ITFC. Give him a chance Huddersfield fans!

@OliverLiversid1: Good luck Lee lad. Hopefully you get all the back room support you need

@TheTips35454604: Fantastic let’s all get behind this and bring back the good times 😀⚽

@benrjtodd: Welcome to Huddersfield Lee! I’m excited with this appointment. An incredible gamble by Kevin with alot of risk… but knowing he was part of Ipswich’s rise up the leagues – I’m excited to see his style of play and philosophy alongside his leadership/comms as a former GK! #htafc

@TTCMatt: I’ve heard really positive references of his over the last few weeks. Time to go in with a blank slate, get behind the guy and hope that he’s the one to turn the Titanic around – or at least patch up the hull after it’s been battered by several icebergs.

@Terriersjack: I feel this would have been a tough job for any experienced manager out there let alone someone’s first managerial job. Cant get my head round this one feel Big Sam or Tony Mowbray would have given us the best chance to succeed . That is no disrespect to Grant at all by the way

@connorstaitey11: Hope am wrong and will back him, but I really do think last thing we need is someone who is very inexperienced. Think we needed someone who have has been in our current position before and know how to turn it around like a warnock for example or a rob edwards

@scottnixon001: Could be quite a shift in the style of football from what he said in his interview. Time for everyone to get behind him and let’s hope this gamble pays off #htafc

@14youngjack: Finding it difficult to stay invested lately but wishing him the best. Impossible to call with it being his first management job but needs support and backing. Here’s hoping we’ve found the one that sticks

@Baldwin_Jack: Massive gamble, but the state we’re currently in anything is a gamble atm. No point writing him off before we’ve kicked a ball. Get behind him and see what happens 🙌🏻 #htafc

@thebvc194: As an Ipswich fan, part of this sucks because he’s been a massive part of the change for good. That said, he deserves his opportunity to be a manager in his own right and @htafc are a great club for him to show what he can do. Best of luck.

@rokerroarontour: Interesting appointment. Always think risky taking on a manager in his first job as a number 1!

@Billo20Four7: Welcome Lee… Christ, big task ahead for you fella & hope you are a success. We need it. Surprised there has been no announcement on a director of football though. Would have thought that would be beneficial in view of the appointment… #htafc

@Huddites1908: Some of our fans need to grow up. We’ve just finished 10th in L1 we aren’t in a position to be picky about our manager anymore. We all wanted Wagner, well he clearly didn’t want us. I’m more concerned about getting the recruitment right for once. Let’s get behind him. UTT #htafc
