Crawford Vs. Canelo: Benavidez Sr. Expects A Boring Fight

Jose Benavidez Sr. says fans are “going to be upset” because Terence Crawford is going to make it “boring” in his fight against Canelo Alvarez by moving constantly in their mega-fight on September 13th.

Benavidez Sr: Crawford-Canelo Boring Fight

Benavidez Jr. isn’t buying into the picture that Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is trying to paint about how he’s going to be attacking Canelo, and will possibly knock him out. Jose Sr. says it’s too much size for Crawford, and he’s going to mimic the style that William Scull and Jermell Charlo used against Alvarez.

“This is what I think is going to happen with Canelo and Crawford. The same fight that happened with [Jermell] Charlo. The same with [William] Scull,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Sean Zittel’s YouTube channel, talking about the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford clash on September 13th.

Benavidez Sr. has been saying that he sees Crawford fighting identically to how William Scull and Jermell Charlo fought when they were in there with Canelo. It makes sense. Crawford says he’s going to fight aggressively, coming to win, but he’s moving up 14 lbs after a year out of the ring, and a lackluster performance at 154 in his debut in that division.

“This guy [Crawford] is a little guy. Do you think Crawford is going to come and trade with him? He’s going to box and move. Canelo, if you throw a punch at him, he’s going to catch him. Now, if you try to throw two punches, he’s going to catch you with a big shot.”

Terence’s Inactivity, Age Concerns

Even if Crawford were still fighting at 147, he wouldn’t be able to stand in front of fighters like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis or Brian Norman Jr. He’s too old and has been too inactive since 2020. Fighting once a year for five years can cause erosion in the fighter’s game, especially when they’re on the wrong side of 30.

“I just think it’s going to be a boring fight. People are going to be very upset. Remember this. People are going to be super upset with this fight,” said Benavidez Sr. about the Canelo vs. Crawford fight.

It’s going to be boring because Crawford doesn’t have the size, power, or punch resistance to take the shots from Canelo. In Crawford’s last fight, moving up to 154, he boxed Israil Madrimov, and it was very boring to watch. He wasn’t trying to slug with him.

“David likes to fight. You think if he’s going to fight Canelo, he’s going to move around and just get paid? ‘Oh s***, I’m getting all this money. I’m just going to survive,’” said Jose Sr. about his son, David Benavidez, about how he would perform if he fought Alvarez. “No, he’s coming forward. He’s going to be trying to break noses and make it exciting.”

Crawford’s Defensive Game Plan

Benavidez would bring a much different type of fight to Canelo compared to the aging, smaller, counter-puncher Crawford. He’s not fought like Benavidez, and he’s too old to begin. Crawford will attempt to follow Floyd Mayweather Jr’s blueprint of boxing, moving and holding Alvarez. If that doesn’t work, Crawford will use more movement and fight like he did years ago when he defeated Viktor Postol in 2016.

“It’s never going to happen unless you get $200 million, maybe he’ll fight David, because that’s what he wants. $200 million,” said Jose Sr. about Canelo’s asking price for a fight against David Benavidez. “He said, ‘David has fought nobody. David’s not a champion. David’s a nobody.’ He wants $200 million. ‘He’s 25 lbs bigger than me.’”

Jose Sr. needs to forget about Canelo ever fighting his son, Benavidez. If he had wanted to, he would have done it years ago, and it has nothing to do with the trash-talking that David did. Canelo obviously views Benavidez as a bad style match-up for him, and he doesn’t want to lose fans if he’s beaten.

“He was going to fight Makabu. A cruiserweight. What the f***? Yeah, he’s full of excuses. I don’t even know what to say anymore,” said Jose Sr.
