Royals Rumblings – News for June 23, 2025

Jac Caglianone made a sensational home run-robbing catch on Sunday.

Tracking the ball was the easy part. It was late in the afternoon, so the sun wasn’t much of a factor. The challenge for Caglianone — a rookie in both the literal sense and in the sense that he has played the outfield only since late April — was actually getting in position to make a play on it. He made sure he knew where the wall was behind him, and just started running back. The ball came down on the other side of the wall, and Caglianone took his leap.

“Thankfully, I timed it well,” he said after the Royals’ eventual 3-2 loss on a Padres walk-off.”

Drew Waters tried to do a juke move at home, but was thrown out trying to score a potential game-winning run.

“It looked like he stumbled a little coming around third, but I mean he had nowhere to go,” said Royals catcher Salvador Perez. “The throw took Díaz right into the basepath, and there was nowhere for Drew to go.”

Matt Quatraro was pleased with the way Noah Cameron threw in Saturday’s loss.

“Can’t really argue with the results,” Quatraro said. “He kept us in the game and found a good release point on the breaking ball. It was good to see him battle there.”

Andrés Soto goes deeper into Cameron’s performance.

Out of the 88 pitches Cameron threw, 20 of them were changeups. It had a little bit more vertical break than his average this season, and as a result drew six combined called strikes and whiffs for a 30% Called Strike Plus Whiff (CSW) rate.

“He has a good changeup, one of the best changeups in the big leagues right now,” Royals catcher Salvador Perez said in Spanish. “He’s throwing it a lot, and it’s been working.”

Michael Avallone writes about top performers in the minors, including outfielder Asbel Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was a one-man wrecking crew for Single-A Columbia, falling a homer shy of the cycle and stealing four bases. The 19-year-old’s big game snapped a 1-for-15 skid and hiked his slash line to .282/.401/.344 in 62 games. Gonzalez is second in the Minors with 53 steals and also claimed the Fireflies’ single-season steals record during the contest.

Blair Kerkoff writes about comments from Mayor Quinton Lucas on the ballpark discussions.

“I frankly continue to hope that we have it resolved sooner rather than later,” Lucas said.

“The June 30 deadline set up by the state of Kansas may be a little tough for us, but we’re going to make sure that we have a compelling offer to both teams in that time. “Kansas City, and the state of Missouri, is where they need to be. In terms of where the offers are, I think it will be on the teams to decide how quickly they want to proceed.”
