ESPN’s computer model, the Football Power Index, is giving six teams a “realistic” chance to make the College Football Playoff national championship game this year.
The Football Power Index is a projection-based model from ESPN. It “is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule,” according to ESPN.
The ESPN computer model releases projected win-loss records, strength of schedule rankings, conference champion predictions and more.
It also includes percentage chances to reach the College Football Playoff national championship game. According to ESPN’s computer model, six teams have a “realistic” chance to make the national title.
