Game Thread #84: Milwaukee Brewers (47-36) vs. Colorado Rockies (18-65)

The Milwaukee Brewers come into today’s matchup looking to sweep the lowly Colorado Rockies. Milwaukee has won four in a row and nine of their last 11, while the Rockies, owners of the league’s worst record, are looking to avoid their sixth straight loss.

Milwaukee has won the first two games of this series in rather different fashion. In game one, they got out to a big early lead and looked to be on their way to a blowout, but the Rockies’ offense, which has been somewhat frisky lately, worked their way back into the game and made it close. But the Brewers added some insurance runs late, and ultimately walked away with a 10-6 victory. In game two, the Brewers’ offense gave the pitching staff an early lead, more than enough for Quinn Priester, who pitched seven one-hit, shutout innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts on the way to a 5-0 Brewer victory.

On the mound today for the Brewers will be Chad Patrick. He’s on a string of mediocre starts after an excellent first couple of months in the big leagues — he’s allowed four, four, and five runs in five completed innings in his last three games, respectively. The modest step back comes at an inopportune time for Patrick, as the (hopefully) impending return of Brandon Woodruff — possibly as soon as next weekend — could threaten his place in the major league rotation.

For the Rockies, they’ll send their longtime starter Germán Márquez to the hill. Márquez has pitched for the Rockies since 2016, and despite missing almost all of the 2023 and 2024 seasons, is fourth in team history in games started with 190 — he should pass former Brewer Jorge De La Rosa, and possibly Aaron Cook, this season. (His current teammate and Friday’s starter Kyle Freeland is first.) Like most of the Rockies’ pitching staff, Márquez has struggled this season, but there are underlying suggestions that Márquez has suffered from some bad luck. While he sports a pretty rough 5.79 ERA, his FIP is all the way down at 4.11, as his BABIP this season is .353, seventh in the league among players with at least 50 innings pitched (behind, among others, two of his teammates; the Rockies’ defense is not good).

No surprises in the lineup today as the Brewers will roll with the group that’s led to much of their success over the past several weeks. Note that two Brewers come into the game with double-digit hit streaks: Christian Yelich at 11 and Brice Turang at 12. On the other side, we’ll see old friend Orlando Arcia in the lineup for the first time in the series.

First pitch today is at 1:10 p.m. on FanDuel Sports Network and the Brewers Radio Network.
