Coming into Saturday’s Combine, Texas’ Isaiah Bond called his shot that he was going to break the 40-yard dash record.
He might’ve overpromised.
In the lead-up to the NFL’s league-wide scouting event, the Longhorns receiver said: “I’m going to break the record tomorrow — for sure.”
“I’ve been running my whole life. I’ve been one of the fastest my whole life,” Bond told reporters. “When practice meets preparation, greatness is achieved. I’m going to go out there and trust my training — put on a show.”
“[There’s] not a receiver out there that has the speed that I have. And it’s not [just] the speed — I feel like I’m a complete receiver. I have amazing routes. If you watch the tape, you’ll see that.”
Bond promised a 4.20, or even a 4.1, if he was feeling good.
And while his 4.41 certainly wasn’t a bad time, it wasn’t close to record-breaking — and social media was all over him for it.

“Put this man in prison…. that lie the worst in draft history,” a user said.
“I guess you wanna speak it into existence but you gotta at least be the fastest WR if you say that,” another person replied.
“Still fast but you can’t be saying all that and run a sub 4.4,” a fan commented.
“Do not draft list,” another user posted.
“Hopefully this teaches him a lesson. Confidence is great but you have to be able to back it up. 4.39 on its own would be a good time. But because he under-delivered on his promise, it changes the way we look at it,” another pointed out.
“I waited around all day to see him run the 40… what a waste.”
“HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.”

It’s unfortunate that Bond came up so short after setting the bar so high. But his official time was 4.39 and that should be more than enough to get him on a team’s radar in the first few rounds.
