Tyler Glasnow delivers in a healthy return, but Dodgers drop 6th straight – Dodgers Digest

Riding a five-game losing streak is not likely how Tyler Glasnow wanted to return for his first start since April, but that was the situation and he responded admirably. He battled through scattered command issues and some sloppy defense, not allowing an earned run through five frames. The offense continued to look anemic, but they got some gifts and managed to scrap and claw their way to a couple of runs. That wasn’t enough as Tanner Scott blew the save in the 9th and Kirby Yates couldn’t prevent a run in the 10th in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers. Six straight losses for the Dodgers. Oof.

======

Things looked bleak early against Brewers starter Jose Quintana, like potential no-hitter kind of bleak. Through the first four innings, he issued just a lead-off walk in the 2nd as he cruised through the lineup.

Quintana also got the first two outs of the 5th, but amusingly ran into trouble against the bottom of the order. A Miguel Rojas walk was followed by a run-and-hit single by Esteury Ruiz to break up the no-no and corner the runners. Ruiz then stole second, James Outman drew a walk after a 50-50 check swing call, and a run was forced in with a Shohei Ohtani four-pitch walk (of which, two were strikes).

That was it as Mookie Betts flew out with the bags juiced, but it was 1-0 in the 5th at least.

On the other side was Tyler Glasnow finally making his return to the rotation for the first time since late-April. Despite some up-and-down starts during rehab, he looked relatively sharp today barring a few bouts of command issues.

After a clean 1st, he faced potential disaster in the 2nd. A lead-off single was followed by a walk, and after he got the first out, a double steal put a pair in scoring position. He then walked the next hitter to load things up, but induced a foul pop and got a key strikeout to end the threat.

That put him back on track, as he got a clean 3rd and gave up just a two-out single in the 4th. The 5th was … odd, as a lead-off walk was balked to second with one out, then that runner stole third and scored the tying run due to an errant throw from Will Smith. 1-1.

Glasnow completed the rest of the inning without issue, and really should’ve had five shutout: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 5 K, 85 Pitches.

Back to the offense, after Quintana got a scoreless 6th, the pen entered. An infield single from Rojas started the 7th, and with one-out Teoscar Hernandez pinch-hit and drew a walk. Hyeseong Kim pinch-ran for him, and he and Rojas orchestrated a double steal to put a pair in scoring position. After Ohtani was pitched carefully for a walk to load things up, Mookie came through with a sac fly this time for a 2-1 lead.

Dills followed with another walk to re-load the bases, but Freddie Freeman‘s struggles continued as he grounded out to end the threat.

Two scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th followed, deepening the offensive woes.

——

For the Dodgers pen, Alex Vesia took over for Glasnow in the 6th and gave up just an infield single. Ben Casparius was back in the pen in the 7th, and while he gave up an infield single that could’ve been erased after a questionable call…

Got away with that, I think.

…Will did erase him on a caught stealing, and Ben faced the minimum in the frame. He continued on in the 8th, starting with a hit batter, but rebounding with a pair of outs while only allowing a steal.

That led to Tanner Scott entering for a four-out save, and he ended the 8th on one pitch. Unfortunately things got immediately messy in the 9th, as a lead-off single began the affair. After a three-pitch strikeout, Scott then allowed back-to-back singles (the RBI one to Andrew Vaughn, of course) to tie the game at 2-2 and corner the runners.

They needed him to be good badly, and while he got singled to death, just too much zone and lack of execution. Scott did then get a strikeout and a groundout to keep things tied, but … yeah.

Anyway, “bonus” baseball.

In their half of the 10th, the Dodgers struck out three times. Cool.

Against Kirby Yates, a flyball moved the Manfred Runner over and Jackson Chourio singled to walk it off.

The Dodgers will have the day off tomorrow as they travel back to the West Coast for the last series before the All-Star break, a three-game series against the rival Giants. It’ll be on MLB Network at 4:15 PM HT/7:15 PM PT/10:15 PM ET with Dustin May facing off against Logan Webb in a tough draw. Great.
