On one hand, at least the Dodgers showed fight instead of packing it in when they got behind big like they usually do. On the other hand, the relevant thing is they’ve now lost seven straight games after they got buried in a six-run deficit and could only claw five runs back.

Halfway through the game, things looked incredibly bleak, so let’s look at how we got there.
Dustin May looked solid early on before doing his thing and combining a lack of command with a penchant to giving up extra-base hits. Scoring started in the 2nd via a Willy Adames homer to the deepest part of the park, but he was otherwise cruising along.

The real problems started in the 4th when he issued back-to-back walks to put a pair on, and he later allowed a triple to Jung-Hoo Lee to plate a pair of runs.

May then got a run against him saved thanks to a double play on a throw from Michael Conforto.
No matter, the 5th is the inning that really destroyed hope, as Dominic Smith led the inning off with homer for their fourth run.

Even that wouldn’t have been terrible, but he followed by giving up a single and a walk before getting an out, then issued another walk to load the bases, and the fifth run scored on a chopper for the second out.
That was the end of the road for May, who still cannot find any consistency: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 4 K, 85 Pitches.
Oh right, that seven up there is because Anthony Banda came in and gave up a triple to Adames that plated both inherited runners. He then gave up an infield single to Lee to add an additional run and put their total at eight through five innings.

On the other end, Logan Webb worked around a lead-off walk of Shohei Ohtani in the 1st and then struck out the side in the 2nd.
The 3rd started with Hyeseong Kim singling and then stealing second, which setup Ohtani to demolish a two-run shot into the cove, his 32nd of the year.

Webb rebounded for a clean 4th, and a lead-off single in the 5th went for naught. However, just as I had given up all hope, they rallied right back in the 6th after going down 8-2. Mookie Betts started a rally by getting hit on the thigh, and a one-out double put runners on second and third. Teoscar Hernandez then doubled to deep center off the glove of Lee to make it 8-4.

Michael Conforto followed that by immediately smashing his eighth homer of the year to make it a real game again at 8-6, and he also knocked Webb out of the game.

With two down still in the 6th, Kim reached on an infield single and stole second, but that chance was ultimately wasted.
In the 7th, the Dodgers inched even closer, as Mookie Betts smacked a one-out double and got to third on an error by Lee. With two down, Will Smith came through with a single that cut the deficit to one run at 8-7.
Kim came up with his third hit of the game in the 8th, a double with two outs, but that was stranded as well.

The Giants remained stuck on eight due to some nice work from the depth crew.
Now in a close game, Jack Dreyer took over in the 6th trying to keep it that way. He started by allowing a lead-off single and a drag bunt attempt that ended up as a sac bunt, but stranded the runner to get a scoreless frame. Lou Trivino took over in the 7th and gave up just a two-out single, handing things off to Will Klein in the 8th, who issued a one-out walk but nothing more.

The Dodgers had the top of the order coming up in the 9th, and they got a one-out rally with a single and a walk, but then Will hit into a double play to end it.
