Conor Coady explains the decision behind leaving Leicester City for Wrexham a week until the new Championship season gets underway.

The 32-year-old defender signs for an undisclosed fee (thought to be around £2m), pending international clearance, and on a two-year deal until 2026/27, with an option for an additional year.

Conor said he was thrilled to join Wrexham, citing his new club’s ambition and impressive recent progress as key factors in his decision.

He was drawn by the people at the club, their passion, and the opportunity to play in front of dedicated supporters.

With his Premier League and England international experience, Coady aims to lead, mentor younger players, and drive Wrexham toward promotion in the Championship.

He’s also excited to be close to home, values his conversations with manager Phil Parkinson, and is eager to contribute to a potentially historic season, urging fans to stay supportive for what could be a memorable journey.

The glass is half full, Conor Coady has arrived!

WREXHAM STATEMENT:

Wrexham AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Conor Coady for an undisclosed fee, from Leicester City, pending international clearance and registrations.

Coady, 32, arrives at the STōK Cae Ras on a two-year deal until the end of the 2026/27 season with the option of an additional year.

The ten-time England international joins the Club from the Foxes, where he played 43 times in all competitions.

The Liverpool-born defender adds vital experience to the squad with 485 professional appearances, 198 coming in the Premier League.

On signing for Wrexham, Coady said: “I’m over the moon. It’s a special day, I’ll be honest.

“We’ve all seen what the Club has done over the past few years and for me to join is really special and I can’t wait to meet the boys and get started.”

Coady started his career in the Academy at Liverpool where he captained the Reds at both Under-18 and Under 21 level.

While with the Merseyside club, Coady won the Under-17 European Championships with England, where he was named in the team of the tournament.

Then a midfielder, he made his professional debut in 2012 in a UEFA Europa League fixture against FC Anzhi Makhachkala. His Premier League debut followed in May 2013 in a 3-1 victory against Fulham.

The following season, Coady made a loan move to Sheffield United, where he impressed as they reached the Semi Final of the FA Cup.

In 2014, Coady departed his boyhood club to join Huddersfield Town where he made 45 appearances in his one and only season with the Terriers.

After his standout performances at Huddersfield, Coady found his home at Wolverhampton Wanderers where he stayed for eight years.

Converted to centre-back, he led Wolves to promotion to the Premier League in 2017/18 and was an ever-present as they achieved European qualification in 2018/19.

The centre-back played every minute of the UEFA Europa League campaign and his performances resulted in a place in UEFA’s Squad of the Season for the competition.

On the international stage, he was a part of England’s 2020 European Championship runners-up squad.

After making 317 appearances for Wolves, Coady signed a season-long loan deal with Everton, where he featured 25 times for the Blues.

He ended his successful stay at Molineux in 2022, when he joined Leicester City and earned his second promotion to the Premier League.

On his signing, Phil Parkinson said: “We’re delighted to welcome Conor to the Club. He’s a player who has experience in the Premier League and Championship and will be a great addition to the squad.

Actually think Coady was given a rough ride by fans at #LCFC. Didn’t contribute enough on the pitch – granted – but was an honest pro and not afraid to shirk responsibility.

But, a deal that works for everyone in my opinion – a high earner off the books and a fee in the bank. https://t.co/NQUmITZChN
