Trae Young Unlikely To Extend With Hawks; Could Re Sign Next Summer

Veteran guard Trae Young is unlikely to reach an agreement with the Atlanta Hawks on an extension. However, Young and the Hawks are open to signing a new contract next summer, when the point guard could be a free agent. Young has a $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season that he could decline to enter free agency in the 2026 offseason.

This season could be a springboard to a new deal for Young. The Hawks are interested in continuing their partnership with their point guard but want to see the team make a playoff run. With Atlanta having added Kristaps Porzingis and Nickeil Alexander-Walker this summer, combined with a return to health for Jalen Johnson, Young is confident he can lead the team deeper into the postseason.

Young is also fond of Hawks coach Quin Snyder. The two have built a great relationship, including Snyder praising Young for his effort to improve on the defensive end of the floor.
