Emmet Sheehan continues the run of starter dominance, bats smash 4 homers as they’ve won 3 straight – Dodgers Digest

After taking the series opener against the Rockies, the Dodgers were looking for a little something called a winning streak, and they managed to do exactly that. The bats put them ahead early — Teoscar Hernandez homered twice, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman did it once — and Emmet Sheehan continued the trend of starters dominating by going 7 frames and striking out 9. That’s now three in a row after a 7-2 victory.

======

The offense has needed a game to get them going a bit, and maybe old reliable German Marquez is exactly what they needed.

After a 1st where they went down in order on just 10 pitches, the constant traffic started in the 2nd. Will Smith led the inning off with a double, advanced to third on a deep flyball, and scored on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 lead.

Things began again with two outs in the 3rd, as Shohei Ohtani walked, stole second, and Mookie Betts continued to rake, smashing his 17th homer for a 3-0 lead.

In the 4th, they scored again with one swing from Teoscar Hernandez, who drilled his 22nd homer to make it 4-0.

The Dodgers rallied against Marquez again in the 5th, as Andy Pages singled, tagged to advance to second on a ball hit to the wall, and then scored when Shohei scorched a single to make it 5-0.

Mookie stayed hot, doubling to put a pair in scoring position, but a strikeout and lineout ended that rally without more.

Marquez’s night ended there, a consistent MVP for the Dodgers.

——

On the other side was Emmet Sheehan, who had tough acts to follow, but he essentially emulated them.

He cruised through an eight-pitch 1st and tallied a strikeout, then got two more in a 14-pitch 2nd. He then got a 12-pitch 3rd, threw the same amount while striking out two in the 4th, and used just 13 in the 5th. Sheehan was perfect through five on just 59 pitches.

Unfortunately, the 6th started with a softy-hit single from Kyle Karros to break that up, and then Michael Conforto had a disaster in left to let a flyball single to fall in.

If you’re an outfielder, you can’t pull up on this. That’s a brutal play for a third baseman. pic.twitter.com/TSVbqR0pWq

Ugh.

Sheehan rebounded with a strikeout, but then another blooper fell in and the Rockies were on the board, 5-1.

He followed that by inducing a double play, so no more damage or increased tension at least, though it sucked for him.

The big “rally” against Sheehan.

Sheehan came right back in the 7th, and issued a one-out walk (his first), but struckout the side to complete a dominant seven frames.

Sheehan is rolling, man: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K, 93 Pitches.

——

After quiet innings for the offense in the 6th and 7th, the 8th saw insurance added behind Freddie Freeman‘s 20th homer and Teoscar’s 23rd to make it 7-1 just like that.

To close out the game, it was Alex Vesia back from injury in the 8th, and he struckout two in a clean frame. Kirby Yates entered for the 9th looking to find anything, and he got the first two outs before giving up a homer.

Of course.

Yeah.
