A 3-game sweep and a 3-game NL West lead behind Snell & Betts – Dodgers Digest

The Dodgers had a golden chance tonight to really get some momentum rolling, and they thankfully managed to do exactly that. The bats put up a crooked number early as Mookie Betts continued his hot hitting, and Blake Snell pitched six shutout in a 9-0 win to complete the sweep of the Rockies. That’s four in a row.

======

Let’s start with the rotation and Blake Snell, who tonight managed to find his usual number of whiffs again even if it came with an also typical elevated pitch count.

Snell surrendered a one-out walk in the 1st and a two-out single in the 3rd, facing his first RISP in the 4th after a two-out walk and stolen base, but giving up nothing. He continued rolling and made sure there wasn’t a whole lot to write about, giving up just a one-out single in the 6th before ending his outing with nothing but zeroes on the board.

This was pretty peak Snell, complete with double-digit strikeouts and deep counts: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K, 104 Pitches.

Fortunately, Snell was able to exit the game with a lead thanks to some early offense. Surprisingly, it didn’t come in the 1st despite this Mookie Betts “single” that fell in.

Rather it was the 2nd that did it, and another Rockies miscue on a Tommy Edman grounder started things off. Miguel Rojas continued his hot hitting with a single, then Andy Pages followed with a double off the wall to start the scoring. Enrique Hernandez followed with a flyball down the line in right, which was tracked down for a sac fly after Miggy unhooked the trailer to score. After a groundout made it two down, the Dodgers continued to rally behind a Shohei Ohtani single and a Mookie double to make it 4-0.

The rally ended there and the Dodgers followed with three relatively uneventful innings.

The 6th provided some life, as Rojas started things again with a single, and later Ben Rortvedt kept things going with a single of his own to corner the runners with two outs. The Rockies then unintentionally intentionally walked Shohei on four pitches to load the bases, but Mookie lined out to end that chance to blow things open.

Of course, the pen still had work to do, as this was the kind of game they usually imploded to kill off all the vibes.

These are the kinds of games the pen melts down and makes one loss feel like two, so let’s change that, plz.

Well, Michael Kopech made things look like a repeat of games past immediately. He started the 7th by getting an out, but then walked the next three batters to load them up.

And so Dave Roberts went to Alex Vesia to bail him out, and he did exactly that with two huge back-to-back strikeouts.

Shockingly, Dave then went to Kirby Yates, but he fortunately rewarded his confidence, getting a 1-2-3 frame in the 8th.

——

All this time the offense hadn’t been able to add on, but after a quiet 7th, the Dodgers floored the accelerator in the 8th.

Andy Pages led off with a single, Rortvedt followed with his second single with one out to put a pair on, and things were loaded after Shohei reached on catcher’s interference. So Mookie came up again with the bags jacked, and on a 3-0 count he swung away and pummeled a ball for his 18th homer of the year to make it 8-0.

That’s his fourth hit of the night and his fourth homer of the month, tying his season high in a month in just 10 days.

Teoscar Hernandez then followed that by smashing his 24th dong of the year, pushing things to 9-0.

And so it was Anthony Banda able to cruise home in the 9th, though he did issue a walk.

Neato!

People wanted to move this man off short, lol.

The Dodgers will now have tomorrow off, though they only have to travel to San Francisco for a suddenly big three-game series with their rivals with playoff implications for both. It’ll kick off on MLB Network and SNLA at 4:15 PM HT/7:15 PM PT/10:15 PM ET with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the bump against Justin Verlander.
