Tanner Scott gives up a walk-off grand slam after horrendous foul tip call – Dodgers Digest

For months now, the Dodgers have had a problem with coming out flat after a day off no matter how they were playing before, and today was no exception as they again were blanked early by Justin Verlander. Once again, it was Yoshinobu Yamamoto victimized despite yet again dealing. However, they both got a no-decision as the game stayed deadlocked into extras, and eventually things ended in controversy when a foul tip call was overturned and eventually resulted in a walk-off grand slam for the Giants to hand the Dodgers a 5-1 loss.

I have bad news. https://t.co/yHuED4u33L

Coming off an almost no-hitter, Yoshinobu Yamamoto was back on the mound and he didn’t get through the 1st with a no-no this time. After a strikeout, Rafael Devers battled back from 0-2 to draw a walk, and Willy Adames drove him home with a double and an Andy Pages bobble in center for a 1-0 Giants lead.

He locked in immediately after that, retiring the next 20 in a row in dominant fashion. Like … there’s not much to write about because it was just three up and three down.

He did get defensive help from right fielder/shortstop Mookie Betts.

Absolute dominance: 7 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K, 91 Pitches.

——

Unfortunately, old man Justin Verlander continued to turn back the clock against the Dodgers early. The Dodgers got just a one-out walk in the 1st and a two-out walk in the 3rd as he cruised through the early frames.

The Dodgers did rally to start the 4th, as Freddie Freeman collected their first hit with a single and Max Muncy drew a walk to put a pair on with nobody out. However, Teoscar Hernandez popped up to the infield and Michael Conforto broke his bat for a weak out that just advanced the runners. It seemed like Andy Pages might’ve tied the game with an infield single next, but Matt Chapman came up with a gem to throw him out and keep the Dodgers off the board.

He then rebounded with a clean 5th and gave up just a two-out single in the 6th, so he continued in the 7th as well. That backfired when Michael Conforto of all hitters smashed his 11th of the year to dead center to tie things up at 1-1.

After a pair of lineouts followed, Ben Rortvedt continued to stay hot, lining a double off the top of the wall. Despite that trend in contact quality, the Giants intentionally walked Shohei Ohtani and then allowed Verlander to face Mookie Betts, which paid off with a first-pitch flyout to end that threat.

——

With the game knotted up after seven, both starters exited and it turned into a battle of the pens.

The 8th for the Dodgers resulted only in Max Muncy getting hit in the wrist area, resulting in him leaving in the bottom of the frame. Just a terrible, cursed year for him in terms of health.

Jack Dreyer responded for the Dodgers in the bottom half with a 10-pitch inning that included two strikeouts.

After the bats went down in order in the 9th, it was Dreyer again in the bottom, and things started poorly after a spinning grounder was fielded by Mookie and he threw low to Freddie Freeman for an error. Dreyer rebounded with a strikeout, but a single cornered the runners to put the Giants on the verge.

Blake Treinen entered to try and bail them out of complete disaster, starting by issuing an intentional walk to load the bases with one out, and he eventually did that after inducing a shallow flyball to Andy Pages in center, who gunned down the walk-off run at home to keep things tied!

So, it was extra innings and the Giants began by intentionally walking Shohei. Mookie then hit a medium-deep flyball to right, and it resulted in two outs when Rortvedt made a probably ill-advised tag at second.

That was the end of that, and so Treinen continued in the bottom of the frame. He got the first man with a groundout that advanced the Manfred Runner to third, leading Dave Roberts to turn to Tanner Scott. He seemed to start his game well with a strikeout, but the umpire overruled the foul tip call and gave Jung-Hoo Lee new life. He then walked and an intentional walk followed to load the bases.

Patrick Bailey stepped up and hit a walk-off grand slam to end it 5-1.

Dunno why or how guys are squaring pitches like this off him so consistently, but he has to figure it out in low leverage. Just can’t keep doing this even if this game specifically was not all on him.
