Details are still coming in but there’s no denying that Terrence Bud Crawford was held at gunpoint Sunday morning by Omaha law enforcement. A video is making the rounds where a man who clearly sounds like Crawford is ordered to get out of his vehicle. Crawford states in the video that he isn’t going for a gun and appears rather surprised by what’s going down. Ironically enough, Crawford had just been feted by the city of Omaha on Saturday after a brilliant victory over Canelo Alvarez earlier this month.
It’s likely none of the parties ever expected something like this to happen. John Ewing Jr., the mayor of Omaha and Todd Schmaderer, the city’s police chief, claimed an internal affairs investigation would be in order. ” I’m no not reaching for no gun,” Crawford could be heard saying insistently on the video. While it’s impossible at the moment to know what actually transpired, the incident adds a strange cap to what was supposed to be a terrific weekend.
“Shortly before 1:30 a.m.” a police report states, “officers working in the downtown area observed a vehicle driving recklessly near North 12th and Capitol avenue. A traffic stop was conducted at Cass Street.”
“While speaking with the driver,” the statement continues, “an officer observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. For safety, all four occupants were were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint. The driver was later identified as Mr. Crawford upon verification of his driver’s license and was issued a citation for reckless driving. One passenger, a member of Mr. Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm…. police have confirmed that all occupants are legally permitted to carry firearms. A police supervisor and lieutenant responded to the scene at Mr. Crawford’s request.”
Although he may not have had the most distinguished youth, – this has been true of many, many boxers – Crawford is not a fighter known to get in trouble with the law. Indeed he’s recognized as a family man and has even been criticized for not behaving in an over the top manner. This all may be as simple as a policeman seeing a legally owned gun, then pointing his own gun in response, an act which leads to a large degree of stress all around.
Despite what may or may not have happened Sunday morning, there is no doubt that Crawford is the single most dominant boxer in the world right now. Going up close to three weight divisions to face Canelo led to raised eyebrows but the Nebraskan shocked the world by dismantling Canelo’s wanted attack for 12 full rounds en route to a decision victory.
