Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball head coach Jon Scheyer hasn’t won a national championship. However, the program clearly believes he eventually could.
On Thursday, the school announced it signed Scheyer to a contract extension through the 2030-31 season. This adds two additional years to his existing deal and Duke fans should consider it a win for the program.
Jon Scheyer has proven to be an excellent replacement for Mike Krzyzewski
Scheyer had huge shoes to fill when replacing Krzyzewski — the winningest coach (1,202 wins) in men’s college basketball history — after the 2021-22 season. The legendary coach became synonymous with the program after leading it to five national championships and 13 Final Fours in 42 seasons in Durham, N.C.
Scheyer — who played guard for Krzyzewski from 2006-10 — is showing why he was his hand-picked successor. In his first three seasons with the program, he’s won 89 games, tied for the best mark in Division I history alongside former Butler HC Brad Stevens and former Stephen F. Austin HC Brad Underwood (now with Illinois). This past season, he reached his first Final Four.
