Scunthorpe 0-1 Carlisle saw pre-match scraps, officials criticised, 9 cards with one red, fans fume, and players on the wind up.
It was quite the dramatic National league fixture on Saturday evening, with Carlisle climbing to third in the table by ending 10-man Scunthorpe’s unbeaten start to the season.
Defender Aaron Hayden scoring the only goal of the game in the 20th minute, volleying into the roof of the net at the back post following Archie Davies’ corner from the left.
5th placed Scunthorpe, who won seven and drew four of their opening 11 fixtures, suffered a further setback five minutes before half-time when captain Andrew Boyce was sent off for a challenge on Georgie Kelly.
Carlisle’s players felt the Iron should have been reduced to nine men in first-half stoppage time but Will Evans escaped with a yellow card after appearing to catch Junior Luamba with an elbow.
Sort these refs out, that’s fucking horrendous #cufc pic.twitter.com/COdrTX20NA

Jon Colman of News & Star said in his verdict that the game was marred by controversial officiating, notably the failure to send off Scunthorpe’s Will Evans for a dangerous arm to Junior Luamba’s head, which forced the winger off injured.
A red card was shown by Greg Rollason to Scunthorpe’s Andrew Boyce for an earlier challenge on Kelly, reducing the hosts to ten men. Carlisle boss Mark Hughes said Andrew Boyce (sent off for an earlier dangerous challenge on Georgie Kelly) apologised afterwards.
Fans kicked off before the game, taunting led to fighting with stewards and police soon on scene to break up the scuffle.
After the game, there was confrontations, cheeky banter and anger between fans and players. Have a watch below…
S. Wearne, Yellow Card at 23 minutes (kicking the ball away)
R. Linney, Yellow Card at 25 minutes (foul)
A. Gilliead, Yellow Card at 27 minutes (foul)
C. Harper, Yellow Card at 37 minutes (foul)
W. Evans, Yellow Card at 45+5 minutes (arm across head)
A. Boyce, Red Card at 40 minutes (dangerous challenge)
Z. Westbrooke, Yellow Card at 53 minutes (foul)
A. Beestin, Yellow Card at 84 minutes (pull back)
T. Denton, Yellow Card at 85 minutes (foul)

Carlisle boss Mark Hughes said to the club’s media: “Towards the end, they threw everything at us. You know balls are going to come into your box, and you can’t keep every one of them out — but for the most part, we dealt with everything they had. I thought it was a really battling performance. We’re going to have a lot of these types of games ahead of us. It’s good that we’re showing we can adapt — we can get the ball down and play, but we can also stand up to the physical battle when we need to. That’s exactly what we had to do today.”
On the Scunthorpe pitch: “It was a bit soft and cutting up at times, so we knew it wasn’t going to be a free-flowing kind of game. They’re strong, they get after you, they fight for second balls. We matched that — and that was key to coming away with the points.”
On his squad: “Defensively, we were excellent. Georgie was back there in our own box, heading it away, clearing danger — that’s what you’ve got to have. Guys working exceptionally hard for each other. The two centre-halves really set the tone. Teams don’t come here and win often. We’re one of very few to do it, so that tells you how tough it was. We came through it really strongly — and we’re delighted with the result.”
On Aaron Hayden: “He had a chance just before that, which he was unlucky with — his shirt was nearly pulled off his back — but he wasn’t going to be denied. He was excellent today. He did everything we expect of him at both ends of the pitch.”
Mark Hughes on heated moments: “I wasn’t happy with some of the challenges — particularly the elbow on Junior, which could’ve been even more dangerous. Credit to Georgie — the centre-halves actually came and apologised afterwards, so it’s one of those things. The referee seemed to be quick to book our lads, which was a concern, but we spoke at half-time about staying disciplined. Going down to 10 men would’ve given them a way back, and we couldn’t allow that. We kept our focus and saw the game through.”
On a busy run of fixtures: “We’re getting good results because we’re working exceptionally hard. It’s still early days, but we’ve got a decent total — we’ve just got to keep adding to that. Forest Green at home is another big test, but one we’ll look forward to.”
On the fans: “We had to keep going right until the end, and it would’ve been great to score that late chance in front of them. But I’m sure they’re pleased with the result and the shift the lads put in. Their support really pushed us through.”
On his message to his players post-match: “We’ve got to be able to do both sides of the game. At home, we’ll pass and move and get the ball down, but today wasn’t that kind of match. We had to dig deep and show a different side — and we did that really well.”
Scunthorpe manager Andy Butler: “The referee [Greg Rollason] just seemed to dish it out in certain parts, a few I agree with, a few I didn’t.
“Might have been a second yellow for Boycey [Andrew Boyce], don’t think it was a straight red, and their lad [Junior Luamba] has unfortunately run into Will Evans’s arm.”
Here’s the Twitter reaction as Scunthorpe 0-1 Carlisle sees officials criticised, 9 cards with one red, fans fume, and players on the wind up….
@Tomw0892: I think the fact that Scunnys manager says Luamba ran into their players elbow sums up the club and fans perfectly. Pretty much took his head off and should be banned. Horrible football club. How they are 4th is beyond me #cufc
@fish_blues: Ridiculous from their manager. Embarrassing really. I’m all for a manager protecting his players, but there is a right time to do that & this isn’t it. #cufc
@D_Stokoe: Players putting bodies on the line defensively! Feeney’s organising and in game management makes a massive difference. Shoutout Hayden coming in without making a match day squad for a while and headed everything. Up the Blues!
@cufcdanny: Another fan base well & truly rattled & it’s bloody great. 😍😂 End of day, we weren’t great but did what we needed to. Scunny were so shit & just wanted to assault players instead of play footy. How they’re unbeaten I’ll never know. Such a poor team #cufc #IRON
@jcrell0: ‘11v11 we would’ve won’ played 30 mins of 11v11 and we were winning. Apparently deserved to win yet didn’t have a single shot on target. Worst team they’ve played yet the only one to beat them🤔. Another weird fanbase rattled. Gotta love winning these kind of games #cufc
@KadynSUFC: After looking at yesterday’s game, annoyingly the Boyce decision was probably correct, and Will Evans was very lucky to stay on the pitch. Brilliant effort in the second half to try take something out of the game, but it is what it is. Bring on Morcambe. #UTI #Iron
@james_cufc2000:Post match thoughtsVery lucky but a win is a winRef lost total control of the gameScunthorpe proper dirty bastardsFeeney was fantastic in the back he’s been very missedSecond half was poor from us and very risky at timesGap is very close now#cufc
@tracy_sturgess: Great result, great team performance, and those all important 3 points. Oh Feeney, how we’ve missed you. Taking charge, in the Ref’s ear, commitment from the off. Also, a massive congrats to Hayden on your performance and that goal. Onwards and upwards now Blues 💙⚽️
@Chris_CA2: That second half wasn’t pretty but we’ll take it, up the blues.
@sufc1899: Fair play. Awful footballing side but very physical and defensively very solid. Deffo not a promotion winning team tho
@spiderwebb2019: Someone might need to check on the scunny fans this morning 😂 bless them, drinking there tears 😭 ‘but they dominated 🥳 #cufc
@varty151: Massive 3 points there. Should have been all over by half time but on the balance of the 2nd half they probably deserved a point. Not many teams will go there and win this season.
@dan_batemannn: Let the game drift in the second half against ten men and made hard work of it but a HUGE three points for us today. Back four all outstanding and Kelly up top with a proper old fashioned striker display, had them worried and rattled from the first minute! Get in! 💙
@Matthewgaskell9: Them two Georgie Kelly performances this week were unbelievable 🐐 Aaron Hayden superb the goal really settled him and Grant looks so much fitter and stronger than he did in his first game. Bring on the vegans
@capsnbovril: Wasn’t pretty, but effective I guess. Hayden has always been a threat from set pieces at this level. Fair play to the fans made a bit of a racket and decent numbers. See you at yours!
