Mac Jones will aim to impress again when the quarterback deputises for Brock Purdy as the San Francisco 49ers (5-2) play another game without a lengthy list of injured players at the Houston Texans (2-4) on Sunday.

The 49ers are level with the Seahawks and Rams at the top of the NFC West and face opponents who have won two of their last 20 meetings with teams holding better records, but the Texans’ defense leads the way in the NFL in terms of points allowed per game.

“They’re really, really good,” warned Jones. “Top defense in the league, great front, great linebackers and really solid secondary.

“They’ve played a lot of football together and are a really talented group who are well coached. We have a huge challenge.

“They’re very sound. They have elite linebackers and guys who have seen our type of offense a lot, so they kind of know what we’re doing and not doing. We’ll definitely have our work cut out.”

The 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons 20-10 at Levi’s Stadium on Monday, a day before the Texans’ two-game winning run ended with a 27-19 defeat at the Seattle Seahawks.
