The National Women’s Soccer League regular season is over and the playoff field is set. Here’s how the clubs shape up after most of Week 26.
Cream of the Crop/Shield Winners
z-Kansas City Current (21-3-2, 69 pts; vs Wave, 2-1): Fell behind early to the San Diego Wave which marked the first time all season they conceded a 1st half goal at home. Yup, sometimes it takes something ending to realize how remarkable it was. From there they had every opportunity to pack it in against a form side playing for a home quarterfinal. But they didn’t, and have still only lost one time at CPKC Stadium across two years. But Bia Zaneratto hobbled off injured and despite a stunning regular season, the Current are not without worries heading into Satrday’s quarterfinal against Gotham.
Second again
x-Washington Spirit (12-6-8, 44 pts; @ Royals, 0-1): Pay no mind to the weekend loss in Utah. That was not a lineup that will resemble the one likely to start this weekend against Louisville. Trinity Rodman’s health remains a concern, but otherwise it was another strong season in the DMV and the Spirit should be feeling good about their chances of a return trip the NWSL Championship.
