The finalized World Cup calendar has confirmed the cities and stadiums where all 48 participants will compete, and Portugal has quickly become one of the main talking points. With Cristiano Ronaldo nearing what many assume will be his last appearance on the global stage, the team’s itinerary has attracted considerable interest.
A major revelation from FIFA’s announcement is the unexpected inclusion of Miami among Portugal’s host cities. The choice surprised many observers, particularly because widespread assumptions suggested that Argentina and Lionel Messi would feature there. Instead, Portugal will be the team showcased in South Florida, adding an unexpected twist to the tournament narrative.
Miami and Houston chosen as Portugal’s bases
Portugal’s standout fixture in Florida will be the clash against Colombia on Saturday, 27 June, set for Hard Rock Stadium. The venue, which has staged major occasions recently—including the Club World Cup and the Copa America final—will now host one of the most anticipated group-stage encounters.
In addition to Miami, Houston has been assigned as Portugal’s other home base. The team will move only between these two cities during the initial phase of the competition, giving the squad a relatively stable travel schedule. This setup ensures that Ronaldo and his teammates can remain focused without facing long-distance relocations between matches.
Ronaldo’s group-stage journey
Cristiano Ronaldo is scheduled to begin his World Cup campaign on Wednesday, 17 June. Portugal’s opening match will be against the winner of the intercontinental qualifying playoff, a contest involving Jamaica, Congo, and New Caledonia.
The second challenge arrives at NRG Stadium, where Portugal will face Uzbekistan on Tuesday, 23 June. After that, the squad will head to Miami for their last group-stage match, closing out the opening round in front of a highly expected international crowd eager to witness one of football’s most iconic figures.
