Texas Tech Earns No. 4 Seed in College Football Playoff, Gets First-Round Bye

Texas Tech fans, go ahead and fire up the playoff posters. It’s official. The Red Raiders have earned the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff and will get a first-round bye. They’re headed to the Orange Bowl on Thursday, January 1st, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

After running through the Big 12 and handling BYU in the title game, Tech got what it deserved: a first-round bye in one of the most exclusive post-seasons in sports. The bye means they’ll skip the first round and take on the winner of No. 5 Oregon and No. 12 James Madison. Not a bad spot to be in if you’re looking to make a deep run.

The full bracket looks like a fever dream. No. 1 Indiana, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 9 Alabama, No. 10 Miami, No. 11 Tulane, and No. 12 JMU all made the cut. But Tech sits in that top tier. And that matters.

This isn’t just a flashy moment for Lubbock. It’s a statement from the Big 12. In a year where most of the national conversation revolved around the SEC and Big Ten beating each other over the head with rankings propaganda, Texas Tech went out and earned a spot the old-fashioned way: by winning football games. And now they’ve got a chance to put their name next to the sport’s elite.

Their regular season was dominant from start to finish, sitting at 12-1, with their only loss coming to Arizona State with Behren Morton sidelined due to injury. While their offense is explosive and lethal, their defense is the headliner. Led by Heisman-worthy linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, the Red Raiders allowed just 10.9 points per game (No. 3), 68.5 rushing yards per game (No. 1), and 254.4 total yards per game (No. 5).

There’s still plenty to prove, however. Whether it’s Dante Moore and Oregon or the feel-good story that is James Madison, the Red Raiders are going to get a heavyweight fight in round two. Still, nobody’s walking into that game more rested, more prepared, or more battle-tested than Tech.

This team has leaned on a nasty defense and a gritty offense all year. And now they’ve got a few extra weeks to gameplan, scout, and sharpen the edges. That bye week is gold, especially with how physical this playoff is shaping up to be.

So yeah, Texas Tech is in. Not squeaking in. Not backdooring their way in. They’re a top-four seed with real hardware already in the trophy case. This isn’t a Cinderella story. This is a team built to compete with anybody left in the bracket.
