The United States national team will face Chile in an international friendly on Jan. 27 at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara. It will be the second friendly match for the USWNT following their traditional January camp. A match against Paraguay on Jan. 24 outside Los Angeles had already been announced.
This will be the first international match for the U.S. women in Santa Barbara, but Harder Stadium holds a historical place in the team’s history. Ahead of the inaugural 1991 World Cup in China, a training camp was held at UC-Santa Barbara, and the USWNT played two exhibition matches against college teams. The U.S. went on to capture that World Cup.
“One of the goals of U.S. Soccer is to take our national teams to new markets around the country, and I applaud that,” said U.S. head coach Emma Hayes. “Playing in a city for the first time is not a common occurrence at this point in our history so I know our players will enjoy being in beautiful Santa Barbara and our staff are really looking forward to January camp and these matches against two tough South American countries. This is the start of an important year for our team and, as always, we’re focused on maximizing every minute we get with the players.”
The first camp of the new year will kick off on Jan. 17 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, and the team will host Paraguay there.
The match against Chile will be the first between the teams since a 3-0 win for the United States in the group stage of the 2019 World Cup in France. The Jan. 27 match will be broadcast live on TBS and HBO Max at 10 p.m. ET. The Paraguay match will air on TNT and HBO Max at 5:30 p.m .ET.
