NHL Rumors: A Full Rebuild Would be Hard for the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks may not want a full rebuild, and it would be hard to do if they wanted to because of so many trade clauses

Dan Murphy: Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford doesn’t think that they have to go into a “full blown rebuild.”

They will look to move out more players to stockpile some draft picks. They’re not looking to move any of their first-round picks unless they get a really good young player back.

Dan Murphy: It was indicated to Rutherford in the offseason that it was highly unlikely that Quinn Hughes would sign a long-term deal with the Canucks.

Farhan Lalji: “Rutherford clarified that the indication he got 1.5 years ago was more of a feeling than anything else. But it was communicated to them this off-season by Quinn‘s camp that it was highly unlikely he would extend here.”

Sekeres and Price: (before the trade last night) David Pagnotta on how hard it would be for the Vancouver Canucks to do a proper teardown and rebuild, given the number of no-moves and no-trade clauses they have, and will have.

NHL Trade: Vancouver Canucks Trade Quinn Hughes to Minnesota

“If you’re moving Quinn Hughes and you’re bringing in all these younger assets, even if they’re NHL level or just starting to get there.

If you’re going through a rebuild, you got seven guys with no-movement clauses, another two guys with partial no-trades, and you got more no-movement clauses kicking in next summer. I don’t know how you can properly go through a rebuild, unless you somehow convince all of them to say, ‘Yeah, you can move me. I don’t care anymore.’

I just don’t see that being realistic. So even with Hughes, even if you’re making that move and you’re bringing in, you know, certain pieces, I just don’t see a full teardown. It doesn’t compute to me.
