Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, one of the most talented players in college football, is heading to the transfer portal. Now, the question is where exactly he will go.
Lagway is one of the best quarterbacks in the portal currently, and with many teams in need of a signal-caller, which programs would be the best fit for him?
After coming into the season as the No. 4 team in the nation, Clemson’s 7-5 regular-season record was more than disappointing. Picking up Lagway would be a great decision for both the quarterback himself and the Tigers.
Clemson will be in need of a new quarterback for the 2026-2027 season with Cade Klubnik graduating. Offensively this season, the Tigers were a mess, the play-calling was poor and success was practically non-existent. Mix in some injuries to the offensive line that forced Klubnik into making hurried throws, it’s not hard to see how Clemson ended the regular season at 7-5.
By bringing in Lagway, they could fix some of these problems. Lagway has a great balance of mobility and throwing accuracy, which could help revive the running game. His experience at Florida fits with offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s timing-based offense. Clemson needs a fresh start at the quarterback position, and Lagway’s skills match what is needed to create explosive plays for the Tigers.
Miami is the more likely option as an expected landing spot for Lagway. Carson Beck will be leaving, which means there will be a gap at the quarterback position. These past two years, Miami has had success by getting a quarterback through the transfer portal.
Miami would most likely be drawn to Lagway’s dual-threat ability. The Hurricanes feed off of their explosive offense, so being able to get a quarterback who has great arm strength and is able to extend plays would seem like a good idea. Miami would also have tons of talent surrounding Lagway, including breakout wide receiver Malachi Toney. Lagway would also likely thrive in Mario Cristobal’s pass-heavy system.
Texas Tech rounds out the top fits for Lagway as a sneakily good option in the transfer portal. The Red Raiders have made their way into the playoff with a first-round bye as the fourth-ranked team. However, they struggled with consistency at the quarterback position. Picking up Lagway would would Tech the elite arm it has been missing, and not to mention, Lagway is from Texas and would probably love to play a little closer to home.
Under Joey McGuire, Texas Tech’s air raid offense would be perfect for Lagway. Their spread system throws the ball 40-plus times a game, and Lagway’s cannon arm and accuracy on deep balls would light up defenses. Lagway would also have no shortage of targets. Getting Lagway could help the Red Raiders win the Big 12 again in 2026 and make another playoff push this time next year.
Out of these three, it feels like Miami might be the frontrunner given its success with the portal. However Clemson or Texas Tech could surprise the nation by getting Lagway.
Wherever he lands, Lagway’s talent will bring an instant impact and a lot of buzz.
