Ryan Mason was left frustrated with West Brom’s 8th straight away defeat and a much talked about red card decision in the defeat at Hull.
Oli McBurnie scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, but despite dominating the first half, West Brom missed a number of key chances, which faded in the second half, then was compounded by a ‘harsh’ red card shown to Alfie Gilchrist.
Hull, who claim a third successive victory, climb up to 4th in the Championship table, with 37 points from 22 games played, while West Brom sit 16th with 28 points.
This was given as a red 🟥

West Bromwich Albion head coach Ryan Mason told BBC Radio WM:
“I’ve not seen the penalty back clearly but I thought it looked a pen. I thought there was a handball.
“I thought the ref had a difficult afternoon, there were a lot of mistakes in my opinion, but I can’t make excuses for losing that game.
“We gave them a penalty, we didn’t take our chances when we got them in the first half.”
On Gilchrist’s sending off:
I don’t think it was a red [card]. I don’t think there was any reaction from the Hull players or our players. The foot was high but I was there and he didn’t touch him but my opinion’s irrelevant.
“The loss was our mistake, our lack of discipline and we’ve been punished for a situation that’s avoidable.
“There has been an emphasis on staying disciplined for 95, 100 minutes and we weren’t able to do that once again.”
Hull head coach Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:
“It was typical [of the Championship] because there were a thousand balls in the air and two thousand challenges. We struggled for the second ball, in the first half especially.
“We started well but lost our balance and West Brom were better – they had two great situations to score a goal and then gave us a penalty.
“We controlled the second half much better and had a few good chances, but kept a clean sheet which is very important and got three big points. The red card also helped a lot, for sure.
On Alfie Gilchrist’s sending off:
“It was very harsh. I was a little bit surprised, because I was thinking it was a yellow card, but he pulled out a red.”
Here’s how fans reacted with Ryan Mason frustrated at West Brom’s 8th straight away defeat and that red card decision…
@althurstonsport: Barely even a yellow from a hull fan, had to ask the lads behind me why he was sent off
@BenStrodder: Never a red, yellow at most and that’s coming from a Hull fan
@johnhull80: As a hull fan this is a shocking decision. Sadly the standard of officiating this season has been really poor. You guys had it tough today I must admit
@matt_vause2003: that ref should be dropped to league 2 doesn’t help us now but the was sooo many decisions that was bad miller should have been booked for diving, the penalty was more a foul on Phillips and crooks should have had a yellow in the first half or even sent off if he this was a red
@Toothy1575: Compare it to the tackle on Bielik 🤯🤬
@ftbl_mouraa: Need to appeal it, ridiculous
@TheBaggiesBible: For all the stick we’ve given Mason, my god has he been let down by some awful displays/decisions by individuals on the pitch this season. #WBA
@JlMIFFER: Nah that’s a stinker, I’d didn’t even realise Gilchrist got sent off until a few mins later. Ref was woeful all game. Millwall had nothing going for their appeal but WBA definitely should get this overturned. #hcafc #wba
@CJHall83: That is never ever ever a red! This ref has been a disgrace all game. Penalised our players for every little thing and let everything go for them. Very rarely do I blame refs for results but he’s influenced this so much! I have to say, I feel very sorry for Ryan Mason after that first half. His game-plan works flawlessly and he’s let down by poor finishing, an idiotic individual mistake and some feeble officiating. #wba
@EyaWeGew: He needs investigating that ref today disgrace. @EFL #WBA
@JS3079: That surely gets overturned and an apology for giving us a ref with no eyes? @EFL
@DBasher87: ‘cAnt bLAme MaSoN’! Eh? That’s a carbon copy of every game under him. Don’t capitalise when on top, standards drop & we get punished, then a sprinkle of ridiculous in-game management. It’s getting beyond boring & no wonder attendances home & away are starting to drop off. #WBA
@ben_dallimore: If that’s a red we’d be seeing red card for probably 90% of tackles.
@_Simonian: If this doesn’t get overturned then that’s criminal he barely fucking touched him 😂😂😂 #wba
@lewis_botfield: I don’t want excuses regarding refereeing or not being able to take chances or anything else like that, to lose 8 games away on the bounce in any league let alone this league is an utter disgrace and shows how far this club has fallen when it comes to accepting mediocrity. #wba
