San Diego Wave FC and goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan have agreed to a mutual termination of her contract.
The veteran goalkeeper signed a four-year extension with the southern California club in July 2023. Her contract ran through the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season.
“Kailen has been an integral part of this Club since day one,” said San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton in a statement. “After discussions, we mutually agreed that this was the right decision for all parties. We thank her for the contributions to this Club and this city and wish her the best in the next chapter of her career.”
During the team’s end-of-year roster decisions, Sheridan was the only goalkeeper listed under contract. The Wave have not made any additional offseason goalkeeper signings at the time of publication. In the release, the Wave stated the club is “in discussion” with DiDi Haračić to return. Haračić has not signed with another club.
Sheridan signed with the Wave in 2022. In four seasons, she started all 86 of her regular-season appearances. She helped the Wave lift the NWSL Shield in 2023 and the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2024. Her first season in San Diego also saw her win the NWSL’s Goalkeeper of the Year award and be named to the Best XI first team.
Sheridan began her professional career with Sky Blue FC — later rebranded as Gotham FC — in 2017, following a collegiate career at Clemson. She started all 80 of her regular-season appearances for Sky Blue / Gotham during four seasons in New Jersey.
During her time with Gotham, she was named the NWSL Challenge Cup Golden Glove winner in 2020, along with an inclusion in the 2021 NWSL Best XI.
Internationally, Sheridan features for the Canadian women’s national team, where she remains the team’s starting goalkeeper. The 30-year-old has made 63 appearances for Canada. She was a member of Canada’s 2021 Olympic gold medal team and was named the 2022 Concacaf W Championship Golden Glove winner, as well as a member of the confederation’s Best XI for the tournament.
