Rangers have struck gold on star who’s worth millions more than Chukwuani

The January transfer window has been open for more than a week and Glasgow Rangers finally look set to add to Danny Rohl’s squad in the coming days.

Glasgow Times reports that the Light Blues have agreed a £3m deal with Westerlo to sign left-back Tuur Rommens and a £4m fee with Sturm Graz for central midfielder Tochi Chukwuani.

The report claims that the Danish midfielder is expected to be signed in time for the clash with Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, in the second match of a double-header against the Dons.

Mikel Arteta’s £6m move to Rangers from Barcelona in 2002 remains the most expensive central midfield signing made by the club, and Chukwuani’s £4m switch will not change that.

The Sturm Graz star will also not move ahead of Barry Ferguson’s £4.5m move from Blackburn in 2005, or Mohamed Diomande’s £4.3m transfer from Nordsjaelland in 2024.

That also means that he will not be the most expensive midfield signing in the squad, as Diomande will retain that crown, two years on from his £4.3m move to Ibrox.

It does, though, mean that Chukwuani is set to become the fourth-most expensive midfield signing in the club’s history when his £4m move from Sturm Graz is confirmed, which will place some pressure on him to make an immediate impact at Ibrox in the coming weeks and months.

Whilst the Danish star is the fourth-most expensive central midfield signing in the club’s history, there is a current Rangers midfielder who could be sold for millions more than the £4m fee that Chukwuani is due to arrive for.

Rangers star Nicolas Raskin may not have been signed for a huge fee, having joined for £1.7m from Standard Liege, but his performances in Scotland have caused his market value to soar.

It was recently reported that Besiktas are interested in a deal to sign the Belgium international, who is said to be valued at around £13m by the Scottish Premiership giants.

Raskin has scored nine goals and provided 20 assists in 128 appearances for the Gers since his move to Ibrox in 2023, per Transfermarkt, and still remains a key player to this day.

The Belgian star has been a regular starter under Danny Rohl, starting 17 of his 19 appearances in the Premiership this term, and his value on Transfermarkt is currently the highest that it has ever been.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old central midfielder is currently valued at £10.4m by Transfermarkt, which is just shy of the £13m reported valuation from the club.

Whether you take the reported valuation or Transfermarkt’s valuation, the Belgian talent is currently worth significantly more than Chukwuani, and at least £8m more than the fee that Rangers paid for him three years ago.

Raskin, who was once hailed as “sensational” by former teammate Scott Arfield, has provided one goal and one assist in the last two Premiership appearances, with a goal against Aberdeen and an assist against Celtic.

His value could, therefore, continue to soar if he can extend that run of goal contributions in the weeks to come, as he had only produced one goal and three assists in the previous 17 outings.

Whether his value increases any more or stays the same, it is fair to say that Rangers have hit the jackpot with Raskin because he is worth so much more than what they initially signed him for.

It will now be interesting to see whether or not any clubs, such as Besiktas, decide to come in with an offer for Raskin before the end of the January transfer window.
