The Miami Open draw appeared to be opening up nicely for Ben Shelton. Then a 20-year-old named Coleman Wong happened.
The No.182-ranked Hong Kong native stunned 13th-seeded Shelton, converting his third match point in deciding set tiebreak to become the lowest-ranked player to reach the round of 32 in Miami in ten years.
“I always trust myself to play in these big stages… I had a tough time [during] the COVID times,” Wong said on court after his emotional celebration. “I didn’t play for a year and a half and I’m really lucky my team keeps supporting me. I’m really happy. This is for you Hong Kong.”
By defeating Daniel Altmaier in the first round, Wong became the first player from Hong Kong to ever record a Masters 1000 win. He will face Lucky Loser Adam Walton next.
Wong played aggressively and assertively throughout the match, and built a 5-2 lead in the third set, but Shelton pegged him back with a break and eventually levelled.
Wong had two match points with Shelton serving at 5-6, but the American delivered brave winners on both.
In the tiebreak, Wong made his third match point opportunity count.
