Oliver Glasner speaks on his outburst, his future, Jean-Philippe Mateta and talks with Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish.

Glasner said that his emotional press conference last week stemmed from frustration over the timing of Guehi’s departure (agreed in principle a year ago, but was announced 28 hours before a game.

He said that he cares deeply about the club and players, but doesn’t regret expressing his feelings, though also admits that it wasn’t the ideal way to do it.

Regarding his future at Crystal Palace, he confirmed he decided months ago, and planned to announce by end of December not to renew his contract and would leave at the end of the season and that this was unrelated to transfers.

He had a long, positive dinner with owner Steve Parish this week to clear the air, with both 100% committed to a strong finish this season.

Glasner said, per BBC Sport: “I was quite emotional after the game which I think shows how much the players and Crystal Palace means to me. Some could say ‘why do you care?’ but this is how I am. I am attached to the club but all the circumstances, and it’s not that we sold him [Marc Guehi], I agreed one year ago in February to sell Marc, it’s all about time and replacement.

“I know that Crystal Palace will always sell players if they have big offers from other clubs.

“It’s just the situation of telling a team 28 hours before a Premier League game that their captain is leaving. This was my feeling at that moment and this is what I tried to express. It feels like criticism but it was just me telling the emotions the team and I had.

I had a very long dinner with Steve [Parish] this week and we talked about the situation not to sell Marc, again the timing and a possible replacement. I wanted to explain and it was a very good talk for both of us but nothing changed what I told at the press conference before the Sunderland match when I said I will give my best for a great season and Steve and me are still 100% committed.

“I know the club is very hardworking to do the right things and it’s not so easy in finding and replacing a right centre-back we are discussing ‘shall we do something else’ and we know this but, in this moment it felt like we could do better for the success of the team and Crystal Palace.

“It was a thunderstorm but after a thunderstorm the sun is shining and it started when we started to train again. We had a very great week in training, great spirit and of course it lifted the mood that Munoz and Sarr came back. It’s all fine.”

On whether Guehi could have stayed for the game against Sunderland: “It’s gone. It makes no sense, Marc is gone and the game is over.

“He was our captain, had such a great time for Palace playing and always supporting the team and performing at such a high level consistently. I wish him all the best and expect he’ll have his debut Saturday and I wish him the best, he’s signed for a huge club here in England. It’s for us looking forward and not looking back at what happened, everything is cleared between Steve and me.

“Steve Parish is a great guy, Oliver Glasner is a nice guy and if two nice guys talk to each other in a proper way, there won’t be an issue.”

On whether his announcement that he’ll be leaving the club took the board by surprise: “No, never. To be honest, I planned to tell it by the end of December because I wanted to avoid anybody saying ‘Oliver is not pleased with the transfer window and that’s why he’s leaving’ – it’s nothing to do with it.

“But then there were all these reasons, all these games and we decided to wait three game weeks.”

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirms he won’t be signing a new deal at end of season

On reports that Jean-Philipe Mateta wants to leave: “Very clear. He didn’t hand in a transfer request and we have no bid received right now. That’s the situation.”

Have you spoken with him about it? “I speak with many players about different topics but it’s a service I don’t tell it publicly.”

On needing to replace him if a big bid does come in: “I’ll repeat what I said two weeks ago – [for] every player there is a price where a club say okay. Evaluating the whole situation – age, contract, duration and a price where the club says ‘okay we agree a deal’ but no bid has come in and he hasn’t handed in a transfer request and he will play Sunday.”

Asked if he regrets his comments after the Sunderland game: “No I don’t regret. Do I think it was the best way? No I don’t think so but that’s Oliver Glasner. I’ve always told you that’s Oliver Glasner.

“It’s a part of what we achieved together that I’m emotional. It helps to create spirit, togetherness and belief, sometimes it’s not the best possible way but that’s me. I don’t say I’m perfect, I would like to be. I never attacked anyone personally, I just explained my feelings.”

Here’s the social media reaction as Oliver Glasner speaks on his outburst, his future, Mateta and talks with Palace owner Steve Parish…

Whilst I’m sure he said this in good faith, I’m not sure fans will fully buy into the “it shows how much Palace means to me” line when you decided 3 months ago that you wanted out at the end of the season. https://t.co/KcWmxdu3tV

@jtlcubs23: Glasner’s outburst was probably an attempt to get sacked. But after talking with Parish he probably understands that Palace won’t let him leave early without financial compensation, and if he doesn’t start winning matches the job offers might dry up by summer. New attitude now.

@andylatts: That’s the Glasner I know! Happy he explained everything & was his usual self, hopefully the club + fanbase can move on, hopefully get the players in we need & get behind team for rest of season! #cpfc

@barrie8: I felt for Glasner. Think he was really gutted about Eze. And truly believed with him here we could smash this season, the belief left with Ebs. Also looks like he is missing his family, which he cannot be criticised for. This probably has a huge bearing on his decision making.

@Alex6264: It’s all about him. When you start to refer to yourself in the third person you’ve lost it. Wanted to get sacked so he could move on and blame the club. Didn’t work out, couldn’t walk away without damaging his brand, so now fully invested. Cynical Bollocks. Disappointing.

@fant1345: I can’t get past the fact that he actually refused to bring on a single sub at Sunderland – just so he could set up his post-match tantrum. He didn’t want to save a point, he wanted to make one. That’s how much Palace means to him…

@gidleymike: It has certainly soured his legacy with the supporters. This gesture of hope we had, that he would discuss his future with SP, when fixtures allowed, was dismissed in such a way, that he could rightly be accused of fabrication. Unlikely to regain the total trust we have enjoyed.

@22deans: If Crystal Palace means that much to him, why not sign a new contract!

@ljbrameld: Find it hard to believe that. I can see you love some of the players – but beyond that there’s no evidence we mean that much to you. 😩

@robertmark1976: After listening to that Glasner Press conference I’m optimistic again, let’s hope it’s onwards and upwards COYP #cpfc

@DeePalace_: Just finished Glasner’s press conference, feels like the air’s been cleared between him and Parish. He said after Tuesday he feels good again and ready to win games. Sarr & Muñoz back, hopefully we push on. If his head’s in it, still a chance to create history this season 🦅

@neiog: Wow, just listening to Oliver Glasner breads belief@ All questions in Press Conf today answered with intelligence & well handled. What a Top Man! No formal transfer request submitted by Mateta. Dinner with Steve Parish this week & all pulling together for next 4 months ❤️💙

@dhugh3sy: why should we believe a word glasner says?

@ballerjoe_cpfc: A lesson in not believing everything you read: Mateta HASN’T handed in a transfer request. Glasner DID MEET Parish for dinner, they both aired their grievances & will move forward positively. Glasner apologised, citing how much he cares for #cpfc club being behind the outburst

@SteveK1969: So Mateta hasn’t actually handed in a transfer request and Glasner has confirmed that he’s 100% committed to helping Palace finish the season strong. Can we now just draw a line under it please and get behind the team. #cpfc 🔴🔵🦅
