The first publicly known inquiry by the College Sports Commission is complete.
LSU said in a statement Monday that the CSC’s investigation into a potential rules violation regarding unreported player compensation has ended, two and a half weeks after it began. Football was not the subject of the inquiry, a source with knowledge of the case said.
“The CSC inquiry into non-reporting has been resolved with no disciplinary action, and any deals that require submission to NIL Go have been submitted,” said Zach Greenwell, LSU’s deputy athletic director for external affairs. “We appreciate the CSC’s prompt review and resolution.”
The inquiry began Jan. 15 and became known Friday through a public-records request. The CSC’s head of investigations, Katie B. Medearis, wrote last month to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry that college sports’ new enforcement arm was looking into a potential failure to report one or more name, image and likeness deals.
The CSC was founded by the Power 4 conferences last year to enforce rules about how schools and other entities pay players. The organization oversees the revenue-sharing system and rules related to the $2.8 billion House lawsuit settlement that allows schools to pay players directly. It also verifies the legitimacy of NIL deals between players and third parties.
Although specifics about the case were not shared, it was notable as the first known concrete instance of the CSC investigating a program or players. The actions and roles of the CSC and NCAA have both been questioned recently by high-profile coaches and administrators amidst allegations of tampering and improper deals. The CSC has also notified other programs of investigations into unreported NIL deals, a spokesperson for the organization said last week.
