Edgar Cháirez narrowly walked away with a victory at UFC Mexico, defeating Felipe Bunes via split decision.
Bunes largely shut down Cháirez in the first after riding him like a backpack following a slick back-take and cinching in a body triangle. Aside from the final few seconds of the stanza, Cháirez stayed on his feet, eating 12-to-6 elbows to his shoulder from Bunes.

Cháirez managed to keep Bunes off his back in the second, though he couldn’t quite match the offensive output of Bunes. Cháirez did attempt to turn up the heat in the final moments of the round, but he’d likely need a finish if he hopes to leave Mexico City with a win.
Bunes landed an early takedown in the third, but Cháirez quickly worked his way back up. In desperate need of a knockout, Cháirez pushed the pace and nearly connected with a spinning heel kick in the closing seconds.
Bunes weathered the late storm and ultimately escaped ‘The Land of Enchantment’ with a much-needed victory.
Official Result: Edgar Cháirez def. Felipe Bunes via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
