The Cincinnati Reds lost to the San Francisco Giants on Friday afternoon 6-3 as Andrew Abbott struggled on the day. Late in the contest outfielder Blake Dunn was injured while in center and had to exit the game with a hyperextended left knee.

The Highlights

Andrew Abbott began his day by hitting the first batter he saw. Jared Oliva then stole both 2nd and 3rd base and came around to score on a sacrifice fly. The next inning didn’t start any better as he gave up a leadoff triple and then an RBI double to put the Giants up 2-0. San Francisco got two more runs in the 3rd after Abbott allowed a double that was followed up by a 2-run home run off the bat of Matt Chapman as the lead grew to 4-0. After striking out the next batter the day came to an end for the lefty and Will Cannon came on to get the final out of the inning.

When the top of the 6th inning the Reds had just two hits in the game to that point. They went out and picked up three hits with two outs, starting with a double by Dane Myers. He would come around to score when both Noelvi Marte and Ke’Bryan Hayes picked up infield hits to shortstop to get Cincinnati on the scoreboard and make it 4-1. San Francisco got that run back on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning when Luis Matos homered off of Yunior Marte.

Lyon Richardson got out to a tough start in the bottom of the 7th inning. He walked the first batter of the inning after getting ahead 0-2. The next batter singled into right field. Then the third hitter hit a bloop single into center that plated a run, but it also led to an injury for Blake Dunn who dove for the ball and couldn’t come up with it. He remained down for a while before being helped up and off of the field. It was later announced he hyperextended his left knee. Richardson buckled down after that and got a double play ball and a strikeout to escape any further damage.

Cincinnati put together a rally in the top of the 8th inning. P.J. Higgins led off with a single before the next two batters were retired. But three straight singles from Carlos Sanchez, Steele Hall, and Yerlin Confidan followed with the latter two bringing in a run as the Giants lead was cut to 6-3. That would be the last time either team would score as San Francisco held on for the win.

News and Notes

Tyler Stephenson went 1-2 with a double and a walk. So did Dane Myers. They were the only two Reds to get on base twice in the game.

Tejay Antone and Sam Moll both threw a shutout inning of relief. Antone (3IP) and Moll (4IP) both have yet to allow a run this spring and have given up one hit each.

Pat Brennan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that after the game manager Terry Francona noted that Blake Dunn would be examined again tomorrow and that the initial look “nothing really stood out” noting that he may have dodged a bullet.

On Saturday the Reds are making another road trip, this time they will be facing off against the Kansas City Royals. It will be a radio only game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05pm ET. Scheduled to pitch for the Cincinnati in the game: Nick Lodolo, Pierce Johnson, Hagen Danner, Anthony Misiewicz, Luis Mey, and Caleb Ferguson.
