Bracketology: Texas basketball projected to make NCAA tourney, barely

The Longhorns men’s basketball team is slumping at a bad time and it might cost Texas a trip to March Madness. Losers of four of its last five games in the regular season, UT limps into the SEC postseason tournament as the No. 10 seed. USA TODAY Sports’ latest Bracketology puts Texas in the tourney, but there isn’t room for error.

Bracketology project Texas as a No. 10 seed in the Midwest region. The bubble is around the eleven seeds. USA TODAY Sports projects Santa Clara, Virginia Commonwealth, SMU and Indiana as the “last four teams in” the bracket. All are projected as No. 11 seeds.

Cincinnati, West Virginia, Auburn and Stanford are considered the “last four out” of the bracket in this projection. These are schools Texas will need to have a better resume than in order to extend the Longhorns season.

A few weeks ago, the Longhorns had improved in Sean Miller’s first year as head coach to an 88.3% chance of making the postseason tourney. But a downturn has lowered those percentages considerably. Miller has even benched and publicly chastised some of his players like Joran Pope.

Texas will now face No. 15 seed Mississippi on Wednesday in the SEC tournament at Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville, TN. The Longhorns really need a win in that game to feel more secure. A couple of wins in the SEC tournament should put Texas squarely in the field.
