Does Gina Carano Have a Chance to Defeat Ronda Rousey?

Few “what-if” fights in combat sports spark as much debate as a matchup between Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey. Both women helped elevate women’s combat sports to mainstream popularity, but they did so in very different ways and during different eras. The question remains: if the two had fought at their peak, would Carano have had a real chance against Rousey?

The Pioneer vs. The Dominant Champion

Gina Carano was one of the first true stars of women’s MMA. Competing in organizations like EliteXC and Strikeforce, Carano brought attention, charisma, and legitimate fighting skills to a sport that was still fighting for mainstream acceptance. Her striking-heavy style, rooted in Muay Thai, made her exciting to watch, and she compiled a 7–1 professional record.

Ronda Rousey arrived a few years later and changed everything. A former Olympic judoka who won bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Rousey entered MMA with a terrifyingly effective grappling style. Fighting primarily in Ultimate Fighting Championship and previously Strikeforce, she quickly became the most dominant champion in women’s MMA history, submitting opponent after opponent with her signature armbar.

The Style Matchup

If these two had met in the cage during their prime, the matchup would have been a classic striker versus grappler scenario.

Carano’s best path to victory would have been to keep the fight standing. She possessed crisp combinations, powerful kicks, and solid defensive striking. If she could maintain distance and land consistently, she could potentially wear Rousey down.

But that would have been far easier said than done.

Rousey’s entire strategy revolved around closing distance, clinching, and throwing opponents to the mat. Once the fight hit the ground, it usually ended quickly. During her prime, Rousey routinely finished elite opponents in under a minute.

The Grappling Gap

The biggest obstacle for Carano would have been the grappling disparity. While Carano had respectable takedown defense for her era, Rousey’s judo was on a different level entirely. She could execute explosive throws from the clinch and transition seamlessly into submissions.

Many fighters entered the cage with a plan to keep Rousey standing, but few succeeded.

Timing Matters

One interesting factor is timing. Carano’s MMA career effectively ended in 2009 after her loss to Cristiane Justino at Strikeforce. Rousey didn’t make her professional MMA debut until 2011.

If the fight had happened around 2012 or 2013—when Rousey was at her most dominant—Carano would have been coming off a long layoff. That alone would have made the matchup even more difficult.

Could Carano Pull Off the Upset?

In MMA, anything is possible. One perfectly timed punch can change everything, and Carano certainly had the striking power to create problems.

However, stylistically and historically, Rousey would likely have entered the fight as a heavy favorite. Her grappling advantage and relentless finishing ability made her one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport during her prime.

The Legacy Question

Regardless of who might have won, both women deserve enormous credit for shaping women’s combat sports.

Carano helped prove that women’s MMA could attract fans and media attention. Rousey took that momentum and turned it into a global phenomenon, becoming one of the biggest stars the UFC has ever produced.

They Finally Meet

Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. This, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) event will be streamed live exclusively on Netflix, marking a major return to MMA for both fighters. The fight is set for 5 rounds in the featherweight (145 lb) division.
