An unlikely late fight-back saw Manchester United come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, preventing a third straight defeat as they also survived a late penalty scare.
For a while it looked as though additional questions were to be asked of Ruben Amorim as United trailed 2-0 to the Toffees, who’ve been transformed since David Moyes’ arrival last month.
After all, a win for Everton would’ve seen them accumulate 16 points from a possible 21 under Moyes, compared to United’s 14 points since Amorim’s arrival in November prior to this game.
But United scored with their first two shots on target, each coming from the 72nd minute onwards, and then were relieved to see a penalty decision overturned in second-half stoppage time as the spoils were shared.
For a long time, there looked little danger of Everton coming crashing back to earth in the early kick-off.
After a muted start, the hosts went ahead through the in-form Beto, whose volley into the ground may not have been especially clean but flew past André Onana’s head and was deemed legal after a lengthy check for offside.
That took the striker to five Premier League goals in four games, one more than he’d managed in his previous 44 matches in the competition, and made him the first Everton player to score in four successive league games since Richarlison in March 2021.
Everton deservedly increased their lead just after the half-hour mark as Abdoulaye Doucouré rose above Harry Maguire to nod home when Onana could only parry from Jack Harrison.
United, who managed a measly two shots in the first half, looked slightly more cohesive after the break but carried no greater threat initially.
After a harmless headed effort by Joshua Zirkzee in first-half stoppage time, it took until the 71st minute for their next attempt, a Bruno Fernandes free-kick that was blocked by an arm.
That led to a second free-kick in quick succession, which Fernandes buried in the bottom-right corner – his first direct free-kick goal in the league since July 2020.
Manuel Ugarte struck a left-footed volley beyond Jordan Pickford for his first goal for the club soon after, ultimately securing a draw.
Though United’s fight-back was almost for nothing. Ashley Young went to ground in the box and a penalty was awarded, only for a VAR review to see it overturned after the former Red Devils winger exaggerated his fall.
