Silas Demary Jr. announces return to UConn men’s basketball

Star point guard Silas Demary Jr. announced on Tuesday that he will stay at UConn for his senior season.

He is the second player, joining forward Jayden Ross, to officially make the decision to stay.

Demary instantly becomes a Big East Player of the Year candidate as he returns to Storrs after averaging 10.1 points, 5.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game  – and shooting 38.5% from beyond the arc – in his first season with the Huskies. He collected first-team All-Big East honors and was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team, in addition to being named the AP’s Big East Transfer of the Year after spending his first two college seasons at Georgia.

The 6-foot-4 native of Raleigh, N.C., helped lead UConn to its third national championship game in four years despite dealing with a grade two sprain that included one torn ligament and two partially torn ligaments in his ankle throughout the NCAA Tournament. He made two critical 3-pointers in the comeback against Duke and leapt for the deflection that led to Braylon Mullins’ game-winning shot to send the Huskies to the Final Four.

More decisions are expected to come from UConn’s roster in the coming days as Dan Hurley and staff continue to recruit the transfer portal for front court players and likely a replacement for backup point guard Malachi Smith (eligibility).

As of Tuesday evening, only centers Eric Reibe and Rrezon Elazaj have left UConn for the portal.
