Defeat against Celtic on Sunday has left some members of the Rangers board questioning Danny Rohl’s future at the club, with five key concerns.
Rangers board split over Rohl’s future
On paper, sacking Rohl at this stage would seem incredibly harsh. The German is yet to even take charge of a full season at Ibrox and inherited a side still reeling from Russell Martin’s tenure. On the pitch, however, it’s set to be a season without silverware for the Gers – something that does not match their high standards.
Defeat against Hearts came as a blow last season, but nothing will have felt more unbearable than Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Celtic in the Old Firm derby.
It’s handed the 49ers plenty to reflect on, it seems. According to TeamTalk, the Rangers board have five major talking points to analyse regarding Rohl’s future, with ‘sections’ of the board backing the German and others raising doubts.
Those doubting his managerial prowess are reportedly concerned about recent performances, the squad’s development under Rohl, the lack of progress in Europe, the style of his football and the recruitment to match it.

This Rangers player should not start either of the final two games of the season for the Ibrox giants.
Some are valid concerns. Rangers’ recruitment hasn’t necessarily improved since the manager’s arrival, albeit only in a small sample in January. To sum that up, it looks like talented loanee Andreas Skov Olsen will not be joining on a permanent deal, despite arriving with so much expectation.
Whether the rest of the concerns are serious enough to cost Rohl his job at this stage is still up for debate, however, as the 49ers contemplate a huge decision.
Rangers should stick with Rohl despite results
It was always naive to think that Rohl could take the scraps left behind by Martin and build a title-winning side. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss deserves credit for turning the title picture into a three-horse race even if it does not end in silverware for those at Ibrox.
Had he enjoyed a full season, the results could have been so different. As it is, the 49ers must stick with their man next season and await the results.
Concerns over recruitment can be solved by all parties involved, not just the manager. And, as that improves, so could the style of play alongside any potential European progress.
Rohl called for more resilience from his players after recent performances. There have been signs of that resilience throughout the campaign, though it was never going to be added entirely overnight.
As much as some on the Rangers board have their concerns, sticking with what they have is their best option this summer.
