Texas Tech football was looking likely to make another run to the College Football Playoff this fall after securing another elite transfer portal class headlined by quarterback Brendan Sorsby. However, Sorsby’s college eligibility has been thrown into question by a gambling investigation that has seen him check into rehab.
At the moment, there is a very good chance that Sorsby is suspended for the 2026 season due to his gambling. Now, he is taking action to attempt to get on the field for Texas Tech this fall. The star quarterback is filing for an injunction against the NCAA that would allow him to play in 2026, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“The filing, made in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, cites the NCAA’s ‘deeply hypocritical’ position on gambling and a ‘wholesale abandonment of its obligations and duties to promote the well-being’ of Sorsby,” Thamel wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The filing also states that Sorsby suffers from a mental health-related gambling disorder that is described as “clinically diagnosed.” It also states that Sorsby would be willing to accept a two-game suspension for gambling.
If Sorsby’s eligibility is denied in court, he would be eligible to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft on June 22. Pro teams would be able to bid draft picks to take Sorsby, who is an intriguing prospect that has gotten some first-round buzz in the 2027 class.
Sorsby has requested a ruling by June 15 so he can enter the supplemental draft if he is denied.
The former Cincinnati star had the option to turn pro after the 2025 season, when his intriguing tools would have made him a riser in a weak quarterback class behind Fernando Mendoza. Cincinnati didn’t ask Sorsby to do a whole lot with the football during his time there, so Sorsby opted to transfer to Texas Tech where he could develop and compete for a championship. Now, all of that is up in the air as he and the NCAA await a legal decision about his future in court.
