Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is officially clearing the air about the Cowboys rumors that permeated the 2024 offseason following a successful 9-4 season, in which Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy. Sanders was heavily discussed as a candidate for the then-vacant Dallas Cowboys job. It appeared that there was steam for his potential hire, as Jerry Jones reached out to Sanders about the possibility.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Deion Sanders said per Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
But in recent comments obtained by On3, Sanders said that there was no real traction regarding him becoming an NFL coach and reaffirmed his aversion to coaching professional football.
“They weren’t real at al. I liked playing the pro game, but I wouldn’t enjoy coaching the pro game. It’s a different game. I’m focused on winning, and getting these kids through college, so they have degrees and they’re able to attain tremendous professions, even after football is over. I have no thought process of the NFL whatsoever.”
Sanders declared that he does not want to coach and the pros have been a constant, dating back to his time at Jackson State University, including a fierce denial in a 2022 60 Minutes special on his Jackson State tenure. On his Tubi show We Got Time Today in 2025, Sanders laid out his thoughts on if he would one day become an NFL head coach.
“I couldn’t coach pro ball,” Sanders said on his show, which streamed Tuesday. “That’s why I say, I couldn’t coach — I know it was cute — but I couldn’t coach pro ball, because the way they practice, the way they go about it, I couldn’t take it. As a man, and as a football enthusiast, and I care about the game. The game is still providing for Troy and I, so there is no way I could allow that to happen on my watch. That would be tough.”
