Texas Tech football received an eligibility twist Monday, as Brendan Sorsby’s reinstatement changed the Red Raiders’ 2026 outlook. The quarterback can now play next season, subject to court conditions.
Sorsby won a temporary injunction from Judge Ken Curry in Lubbock County, blocking the NCAA from enforcing its lifetime ban. The ruling followed a legal challenge tied to Sorsby’s gambling case and mental health treatment, giving Texas Tech its projected starter back before the season.
The decision still includes limits. Sorsby must serve a court-approved two-game suspension, keeping him out of Texas Tech’s opener against Abilene Christian and its road matchup at Oregon State.
On3 posted a reaction Monday on X, formerly Twitter, from an anonymous Big 12 coach who welcomed the opportunity to face Texas Tech with Sorsby available.
“If you’re going to play the joker, you don’t want to play the joker without its arm. I want to play the villain.”

The comment showed how one rival viewed the highly coveted transfer quarterback’s reinstatement from a competitive standpoint. Rather than focus on the legal debate, the coach framed his return as part of the challenge of facing Texas Tech.
Sorsby’s case has created debate across college athletics. The NCAA punished him after an investigation found impermissible online sports betting, including wagers tied to Indiana football while he was on that roster.
Now, the Red Raiders enter the 2026 season with their projected starting quarterback eligible to return after serving the suspension. Sorsby will miss the first two games but could be available once Big 12 play arrives.
For Texas Tech, the ruling keeps its quarterback situation clearer entering 2026. For opponents, Sorsby’s return means the Red Raiders could be closer to full strength once his suspension is complete.
