The 2026 World Cup is just days away as teams from across the globe arrive in NorthAmerica with the dream of winning soccer’s biggest prize. This is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, and for the first time, the tournament is beingshared among three host nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It’s a World Cup of firsts for many. Yet there are still veterans and cult heroes who haveplugged the gaps from the previous generation. These are the players who have seen thegame evolve over the last 20 years. The sport is more unpredictable now. Teams rely on good coaching and data as much asthey do on star power. With this expanded format and so many variables in play, it’sbecoming tough for online sportsbook odds to call a winner. Panama has the oldest squad at the tournament, boasting an average age of 30 with no player younger than 24. Reigning champions Argentina sit in that same older, more experienced quadrant. This tournament feels like a final roll of the dice for both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, both chasing Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup goal record.

Perhaps most remarkably, four players competing in 2026 also appeared at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. That’s 20 years ago. Messi and Ronaldo are two of them, joined by Memo Ochoa and Luka Modric.

These are not ceremonial appearances. Some of these players remain central to their nations’ World Cup dreams. Here are the oldest players set to compete in North America.

Craig Gordon

At 43, Scotland’s Craig Gordon is the oldest player at the tournament. The veteran goalkeeper has engineered a renaissance season with Hearts, pushing traditional powerhouses Celtic and Rangers deeper into the title race than many expected.

He came tantalizingly close to winning the Scottish Premiership in what would have been a storybook ending to a career many thought would end after two big injuries.

Gordon has now become the symbol of Scotland’s late-blooming golden generation finally returning to the World Cup stage. For a nation starved of tournament football, his presence is almost mythological. At an age when most goalkeepers have retired, Gordon remains one of Europe’s most agile shot-stoppers.

Cristiano Ronaldo

At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo enters his sixth World Cup, a record that may never be matched in the modern era.

Portugal’s path to glory has never looked clearer, with a midfield stacked with Vitinha and João Neves arriving off successive Champions League campaigns, paired with the Premier League footballer of the year, Bruno Fernandes. The pieces are finally in place for a nation that has always promised more than it has delivered.

Ronaldo himself has reinvented his role. No longer the explosive winger of his youth, he has become a penalty-box predator, lethal from close range and still obsessively conditioned, with sportsbook like BetMGM suggesting he could still come for Klose’s record if he can get eight goals.

Guillermo Ochoa

At nearly 41, Memo Ochoa is returning to the World Cup stage for what feels like the hundredth time.

The Mexican goalkeeper has become a fixture of international tournaments, a player who emerges from hibernation every four years to deliver superhuman performances. His saves against Brazil and the Netherlands have made him a cult hero with even casual fans.

Ochoa has always thrived in the theater of tournament football, and now he gets to experience a World Cup on home soil in North America.

Mexico’s fans are among the most passionate and knowledgeable in the world, and they will be watching closely to see if their goalkeeper can summon one more magical run in one of the most exciting groups with South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia.

Luka Modric

Ballon d’Or winner, 40 years old, and still dictating games with absurd composure. Luka Modrić’s move to AC Milan last summer revitalized him, proving that elite midfielders can thrive when their legs go. What a pleasure it is to still watch him in 2026.

While he is no longer the tireless runner who carried Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final, he remains their brain, compass, and metronome.

Croatia face a brutal group featuring England, Ghana, and Panama, but if Modrić can navigate that minefield and steer his team through, anything becomes possible in the knockout stages.

This is a final chapter for one of the greatest midfielders ever to play the game, a player whose intelligence and technique have made him ageless.

Edin Džeko

Turning 40 and still Bosnia and Herzegovina’s talisman. Edin Džeko remains one of the most underrated strikers of his generation, a player whose consistency and movement have made him lethal at the highest level.

He dragged Wolfsburg to a Bundesliga title with Grafite, played a crucial role in Manchester City’s rise before the Sergio Agüero goal, and spent his career proving people wrong across Turkey and Italy.

Fresh off firing Schalke back into the Bundesliga as their captain, Džeko arrives at the World Cup with momentum on his side. Bosnia’s hopes rest heavily on his ability to produce one final big-tournament moment, to remind everyone why he earned nearly 150 international caps.

At 40, he is still lethal in the box, still capable of dragging a team forward through sheer determination.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 World Cup represents a collision between eras. This is as much a tournament about longevity as it is about renewal.

While the expanded 48-team format promises fresh contenders and new narratives, the old guard still carries real weight.

Manuel Neuer at 40 adds another layer of intrigue to the German squad. Japan’s Yūto Nagatomo brings veteran steadiness to his team’s defense. Lionel Messi at 38 remains the gravitational force of Argentina’s title defense.

Experience has proven to be one of the game’s most valuable currencies. For fans watching in North America, their presence serves as a reminder that the World Cup’s drama transcends age. Whether they emerge as heroes or fade into memory will depend on the performances of the next four weeks.

For now, they arrive as veterans ready for one final dance on football’s biggest stage.
