Unlike in the Premier League, most of the heavyweights in European football’s other big four leagues were not in action on Sunday.

But there were still plenty of compelling games across the continent, with several having a significant impact on the race for Champions League football.

Here we round up the best of the action.

Sevilla 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Pablo Barrios’ 93rd-minute winner saw Atletico Madrid narrow the gap to both Barcelona and Real Madrid, though their LaLiga tilt hopes remain extremely slim.

Atletico fell behind in the eighth minute when Lucien Agoume produced an unerring side-foot finish from the edge of the area.

But Sevilla gifted Diego Simeone’s men a route back into the game,  Loic Bade bringing down Conor Gallagher inside the area, enabling Julian Alvarez to calmly level matters from the penalty spot.

More poor defending proved Sevilla’s undoing as Barrios was given the freedom to surge to the edge of the box and then find the bottom-left corner with a precise low finish.

Atletico are seven points behind leaders Barcelona, though only three behind city rivals Madrid, the win boosting hope they can at least finish second.

Villarreal held fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao to a 0-0 draw despite having Pape Gueye sent off seven minutes from time.

The draw means Villarreal move ahead of Real Betis into fifth place, which is likely to be a Champions League place in LaLiga this season. Athletic are six points further ahead in fourth.

Roma 1-1 Juventus

Juventus missed the chance to claim a huge victory in a tight race for the Champions League places in Serie A as they were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow hopefuls Roma.

Manuel Locatelli gave Juve the lead at the Stadio Olimpico with a volley into the bottom-left corner in the 40th minute.

But four minutes after the restart Igor Tudor’s side were pegged back , Eldor Shomurodov tapping in on the rebound after Evan Ndicka’s effort had been parried by Michele Di Gregorio.

Juve are fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Bologna, who host title-chasing Napoli on Monday.

Six points separate Atalanta in third and Fiorentina in eighth. Atalanta’s hopes of the title are all but over after Lazio moved within three points of them and one of Bologna and Juve with a 1-0 win in Bergamo.

Gustav Isaksen’s 54th-minute goal settled matters, the substitute sliding home the winner after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru had nodded a long ball forward into his path.

Marseille 3-2 Toulouse

Marseille began the week in turmoil, with players reportedly staging a mutiny against coach Roberto De Zerbi after he refused to train them on Monday.

It ended with fireworks on the pitch, as De Zerbi’s men came out on the right side of a five-goal thriller.

A Gabriel Suazo own goal put Marseille ahead in the 21st minute before Frank Magri equalised seven minutes later.

Mason Greenwood’s 57th-minute effort restored Marseille’s lead, which was then doubled by Adrien Rabiot’s stunning volley.

Marseille are second, three points ahead of fourth-placed Strasbourg in the battle for the Champions League places. Strasbourg won 1-0 at Reims.

St. Pauli 1-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach spurned an opportunity to go level on points with fourth-placed Mainz as the fight for Champions League football in the Bundesliga hots up.

Ko Itakura headed Gladbach ahead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time,

However, former West Ham forward Dapo Afolayan lashed home from the edge of the area in the 85th minute to earn a crucial point for fourth-bottom St. Pauli in their fight against relegation. They are four points above Heidenheim in the relegation play-off spot.
