Texas Tech continued to add to its impressive 2027 recruiting class on Saturday with a commitment from three-star athlete/tight end Zayden Smith out of Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Smith announced his decision on social media, giving Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders another intriguing piece for one of the nation’s fastest-rising recruiting classes. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect chose Texas Tech over a growing list of offers that included Penn State, Syracuse, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, and USF.
According to 247Sports, Smith carries an 88 rating and is ranked as the No. 48 athlete in the country and the No. 20 player in Pennsylvania for the Class of 2027. The 247Sports Composite rankings list him as a three-star prospect with a composite score of 0.8800, ranking him No. 46 among athletes nationally and No. 18 overall in Pennsylvania.
Smith’s versatility makes him one of the more intriguing additions in Texas Tech’s class. While currently listed as an athlete, many recruiting analysts project him as a tight end at the next level thanks to his combination of size, athleticism, and pass-catching ability. He recently transferred to Bishop McDevitt after previously starring at Cumberland Valley, one of Pennsylvania’s top high school programs.
The commitment is another sign that Texas Tech’s recruiting reach continues to expand well beyond its traditional footprint. McGuire and his staff have aggressively recruited nationally, and Smith becomes another East Coast prospect willing to travel more than 1,400 miles to play in Lubbock.
Texas Tech’s 2027 recruiting class has consistently ranked among the nation’s best, now No. 7 on 247, and Smith’s commitment gives the Red Raiders yet another athletic weapon as the program continues building momentum on the recruiting trail.
