“I want to go for another world title in my third weight division,” said Charlo to Fight Hub TV when asked about his long-term plans. “I feel a lot more comfortable at 168. I don’t care who they put in front of me. I might be on the smaller side of the super middleweights, but I feel like I have my advantages.”
Jermall said the trip to Australia is about more than simply getting another victory. After years of inactivity interrupted his career, the 36-year-old wants to remind fans that he still belongs among boxing’s elite.
“I feel like it’s not just a stepping stone. It’s just to get y’all to understand who I am. This third quarter or fourth quarter of my career, I’m going to make it the best one,” Charlo said.
The unbeaten Texan also suggested his ambitions may not stop at super middleweight.
“I’m not done. I got a lot more left in the tank. I want to win another world championship. I might even go up to 75 and even try for another division after this one,” Jermall said.
Charlo later identified two names he’d like to face after returning to the ring. He said he wants another fight before the end of the year, before pursuing bigger opponents, while claiming Caleb Plant has avoided a matchup.
“Let’s get done with this fight in July. Then I’ll try to fight before the end of the year. Give you another fight. Then I want to go and fight McGee. Caleb Plant don’t want to fight. He’s been running for years now,” Jermall said.
Charlo faces LaManna on the undercard of Errol Spence Jr.’s junior middleweight showdown with Tim Tszyu at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. A convincing performance would strengthen his case for a title opportunity in the increasingly competitive super middleweight division.
