“It’s very, very sad, but Floyd had a great career. He made a lot of money, but in his mind, that made him a great genius, a great business genius, a great genius in life. And because he overrated life, he ran out of money,” said Arum to Fight Hub TV.
Arum pointed to Mayweather’s spending habits as the reason he believes the former champion is facing financial problems.
“You can’t, no matter how much money you have, you can’t have two big planes, 10 security guards. It’s going to cost you money. So again, I’m really sad to see that happen, but hopefully he’ll get out of it,” said Arum.
The comments came after Mayweather’s scheduled exhibition against Mike Zambidis in Greece was called off amid a legal dispute involving CSI Sports Events. The cancellation has fueled renewed speculation about Mayweather’s exhibition schedule and financial position, although the former champion has repeatedly maintained that his business ventures remain successful.
Mayweather retired from professional boxing with a perfect 50-0 record after defeating Conor McGregor in 2017 before shifting his focus to lucrative exhibition bouts around the world. While Arum questioned the financial decisions that followed Mayweather’s career, he also made clear he hopes his former fighter is able to overcome the reported difficulties.
