Pitching carried the day on Wednesday, a rarity down on the farm this season. The starting pitchers for the Knights, Barons, Dash, and ACL White Sox all allowed two or fewer earned runs as the former three took home wins.
Shane Smith and Tanner McDougal looked sharp in rehab appearances with the Dash, Anthony DePino went deep for the 16th time this year, and Jonathan Cannon put together a quality start in a Knights’ shutout win.
All this and more in today’s farm report!
Triple-A Charlotte Knights (45-38)
The Knights waited out a two-hour rain delay to deliver their fourth shutout win of the year, 2-0 over the Memphis Redbirds. The game was scheduled for seven innings after the lengthy delay, but took eight to be decided. Charlotte scored its runs in the eighth on a Dustin Harris bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch that plated Rikuu Nishida.
Jonathan Cannon was masterful, as is to be expected in a shutout. He struck out four over six shutout innings for his second quality start of the year, both of which have come since mid-June. Tyler Davis fired 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, while Javy Guerra picked up the save by striking out the only batter that he faced.

Double-A Birmingham Barons (28-49)
The Barons jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Montgomery Biscuits thanks to early home runs from Anthony DePino and Brenden Dixon. Montgomery, however, stormed back to the game in the eighth. DePino answered right back in the home half of the frame, punching a go-ahead single to right-center field to give the Barons the 6-5 win.
Lucas Gordon turned in another strong outing, allowing two earned runs over five innings. Gordon has now allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts.

High-A Winston-Salem Dash (44-33)
On a night when Shane Smith and Tanner McDougal pitched for the Dash, their bats provided enough cushion for any pitcher in a 12-4 win over the Greenville Drive. Winston-Salem trailed 4-2 entering the seventh, but scored two in the frame and eight in the eighth to run away with the game.
Kaleb Freeman drilled his seventh home run of the season amid a two-hit night while all nine Dash starters reached base. Bryce Eblin recorded three hits, a walk, and a steal from the eight-hole in the order.
Both Smith and McDougal were masterful in limited time. Smith worked two scoreless innings, striking out two and allowing one hit. He touched 97 MPH on the gun. McDougal looked just as sharp, hitting 100 MPH and striking out two in a shutout inning.

Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (37-40)
A late Cannon Ballers rally saved them from a true blowout, but it couldn’t prevent a 9-6 loss to the Wilson Warbirds on Wednesday.
Nick McLain launched his second homer of the year in the loss, while Christian Gonzalez reached base three times in his A+ debut. Gonzalez doubled, drew a pair of walks, and recorded a sacrifice fly. Jaden Fauske swiped two bases, his 23rd and 24th of the season.
