Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators are working hard on the 2027 recruiting trail.
They’re putting together one of the best classes in the country, and Sumrall just added an in-state recruit who specifically wants to play at Florida because of him.
That would be Kamauri Whitfield from Orlando, Fla., who committed to the Gators on Monday.
A former commitment of the Tennessee Volunteers, Whitfield committed to Florida over the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Oregon Ducks.
Both Nebraska and Oregon had a strong shot to land his commitment, but it was the personal touch from Sumrall and the Florida staff that really won Whitfield over.
“He was the main recruiter,” Whitfield told Rivals regarding Sumrall. “He used to call my phone every day, FaceTime me, call me while I was training, have me send videos after and coach me already. It made me feel like I could come in and be the face of the program. Having the head coach recruit me the way he did showed me a lot. He was always there. Coach Sumrall really put a lot of time into getting me.”
