Tottenham Hotspur have been making major moves in the summer transfer window, signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to overhaul their midfield.
Having bolstered their options in the middle of the park, Tottenham may now start looking at improving other areas of the squad, and Fabrizio Romano has made it clear they are keen on signing a forward.
Romano said: “Guys, my understanding is the main names to take into consideration for Tottenham for the winger positions are: Cody Gakpo – but at the moment Liverpool are yet to open doors to an exit – and Savinho. Savinho is a top target for Tottenham. These two players are considered priorities for Tottenham for the winger position.”
Spurs have also set out to strengthen at centre-forward, and the door could now be open for them to sign FC Barcelona star Ferran Torres.
Barcelona willing to sanction Ferran Torres sale
According to a report from Caught Offside, Barca are now prepared to offload Torres for just €35m (£29m) this summer, and he is attracting interest from the Premier League, with Spurs and Aston Villa keen.
In fact, the north Londoners are expected to make an offer for the Barcelona striker, who has just one year remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou.
Football FanCast’s Verdict
Credibility
Tottenham may need to sign a new striker, as their current options didn’t exactly set the world alight in front of goal last season. In fact, Richarlison was the only player in the squad to reach double figures for goals.
Finances
£29m feels like a bargain fee for a player who is established at the top level, and Spurs have been willing to spend this summer, with ENIC making waves in the transfer market.
Insight
The 26-year-old was a key player for the Barca side that won the La Liga title last season, scoring 21 goals in 49 matches in all competitions. He also has 24 goals to his name in 63 caps for Spain.
Impact
Torres is a versatile player, who has regularly featured on both wings and at centre-forward during his career. As a result, he could challenge the likes of Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus for a place in Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
Ferran Torres could be another statement signing for Tottenham
Having already secured the additions of Tonali and Fernandes, Torres could be another statement signing for Spurs, with Xavi of the belief he is a top-level player.
The former Barcelona manager said: “Perhaps Ferran has surprised me the most. He’s a player on another level, he’s spectacular: how he understands the space, links play, doesn’t lose the ball, his defensive work… he’s world-class. He’s a great signing, one I wanted, and a wonderful footballer.”
The Spaniard has featured in all of Spain’s World Cup matches, crucially assisting Mikel Merino’s winning goal in the 1-0 round of 16 victory against Portugal.
Torres is established at Champions League level too, picking up 18 goals and six assists in 50 matches in Europe’s elite competition, meaning he could be the ideal addition to De Zerbi’s attack.
