Fernando Alonso’s resume speaks for itself: a record number of Grand Prix starts, nearly 2,400 points, 32 wins and two World Championships. The Aston Martin man is simply the best Spanish F1 driver ever, with his longevity and determination winning fans since 2001.
But, away from the track, his dry sense of humour, quick wit and passion for the sport have charmed fans just as much. To mark his 45th birthday, we’ve gone through his career to find Alonso’s funniest moments – from his iconic team radios to his hilarious celebrations.
Sunbathing in Sao Paulo
An engine failure in Qualifying for the 2015 Brazilian Grand Prix ended Alonso’s session early, but the Spaniard made the most of his unexpected free time.
Sitting in a deck chair on the grass at Interlagos, the Spaniard relaxed while the action continued around him. The image – complete with a glance towards the camera – quickly became a memorable moment.
Celebrating Spaniard
Alonso’s achievements tell only part of the story. Over more than 25 years in F1, his passion for racing and competition has helped make him a fan favourite, reflected in some memorable celebrations along the way.
From the famous Renault yoga pose to title-winning roars and playful podium moments, Alonso has produced plenty of celebratory antics that still bring a smile to fans today.
Classic team radios
When the graphic for an Alonso team radio comes up on the screen, you know you are about to be entertained. He has been making us laugh with his outbursts, quips and cheeky chat with his race engineers ever since his early Renault days – who can forget his post-title singing, his need for racing room in Bahrain, or his rant about Jolyon Palmer in Monza?
Few drivers have produced as many memorable team radio moments as Alonso. For more than two decades, his mix of humour, frustration and sharp one-liners has entertained fans, delivering quotes that remain some of the most iconic in Formula 1. From “We are racing, not testing” to “If you speak to me every lap, I will disconnect the radio”, there’s no shortage of classics.
TikTok era
Alonso has proven that you are never too old, whether that’s performing at the highest level or improving your social media game.
Back in February 2023, the Aston Martin man entered his influencer era, becoming an instant hit among fans thanks to his hilarious versions of popular trends – his jawline video has almost three million likes.
Some more highlights include his ‘Griddy’ dance, watering some flowers, and some amusing skits – and with his account fetching almost 31 million likes, if Alonso ever does retire from Formula 1, at least he has a promising career in content creation to look forward to.
Nando Libre
Alonso always has time for messing around in the paddock, but he really took it to a new level last year in Mexico.
Wearing a lucha libre-inspired mask during the Drivers’ Parade, the Spaniard embraced a much-loved local tradition and quickly became one of the talking points at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
LEGO legend
Alonso went down a storm with his reactions during the 2025 Miami Drivers’ Parade, but he was on even better form during this year’s Silverstone edition.
With all 22 drivers in their own LEGO machines, Alonso only had one thing on his mind – crossing the finish line first. He expertly ploughed through the gravel where others got beached, avoided dangerous collisions with bricks flying in all directions, and used all his experience to beat his rivals and get round Silverstone first – another vintage performance from the veteran.
Paddock pals
Alonso has seen many drivers come and go from the paddock, but he’s enjoyed making plenty of wholesome friendships during his career in F1.
One recurring theme over the years has been his admiration for Max Verstappen. The Spaniard has frequently championed the Dutchman — who can forget his eye-opening reaction to Verstappen’s near-perfect lap in Jeddah in 2021?
The pair also famously shared a hilarious interview after the season finale in 2023, asking each other questions in the media zone before Alonso challenged Verstappen to some friendly competition over the winter break.
Inspector Alonso
The 2009 season was a difficult one for Alonso, making his pole position in Hungary all the more memorable. With the timing screens malfunctioning during qualifying, he had no idea where he stood and ended up asking rival drivers for their lap times one by one.
As each answer came back slower than his own time, Alonso gradually realised he was on pole – a uniquely Fernando way to find out.
